The motto Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime, forms a foundation for the work of many charities and ministries as they strive to help the people they serve grow progressively self-sufficient. So many of the poor in our midst need not just food for today, but encouragement, compassion, and a mentor to help them meet their challenges for a brighter tomorrow. So, as we try to follow the Bibles command to look after the poor, it might be a good idea to pray for wisdom about ways we might best help someone move to a new level in life.
Theres nothing wrong with giving money. Most service agencies rely on donations. But dont be afraid to get a little dirty, to get creative with your giving. Pick up a few extra groceries for a food pantry while youre at the store. Serve a few hours a week at a homeless shelter. Give your time to mentor a child at risk. Whatever you do, ask God to help you meet the deepest needs of those around you.
Father, Im in awe of Your compassion for the poor. Show me how to reach out to others with Your compassion and love. Amen.

Love your posting, Pappy. I was just talking to someone yesterday about eventually wanting to help with a soup kitchen or similar. Someone said at a meeting awhile back that we should offer help not just inside AA, but outside as well. Right much on my "plate" going on currently. I need to get more organized with my time and hopefully God will put me where He needs me.
