I remind myself, that I was in jail with alcohol.

I also remind myself of the sheer joy of my release, when I realised that I could get sober and stay that way.

I never want to forget the hell of active alcoholism, and gratitude is the only way not to forget.

Pain has never been a cure for me to stay sober. Horrific stories and reminders are forgotten in a few minutes after the meeting.

Makes me think back to the time I spent on the inside..

I made sure I worked in the kitchen...and there was always a brew going in the back..somewhere

I think I was drunk every day...

Then I went to inside AA to help my parole..

Colour tv...payphones..jug ups...good food..conjugal visits..

Never learned much...

Had it better in there...then I did in the street

The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink. Our so called will power becomes practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are without defense against the first drink.
