I was just sitting here thinking about my favorite activities that I used to do when I was drinking. One of my favorites was art. I would have a few beers and get out my sketchpad and draw stuff. I had convinced myself that the beer would steady my hand and it seemed to, from beers 2 through 6, but after 9 or twelve or more, forget it the drawing was ruined. Since sobriety, I still draw a little, but not nearly as much.
But, the art that I do now, I can say it is worthy to keep and frame. I just wondered what any of ya'll has to share about this sort of thing? Some people drank and cooked, drank and worked on cars. What's your
take on this matter? ricky61

I read somewhere, and I agree, that early on, a couple drinks did open the mind to an expanded view of things, including being more artistic or more efficient at whatever it was we did ... However, if we go beyond that first few drinks, then a rushing crash to earth is inevitable ... Also, as we abuse the alcohol and age, the mind and body loses most, if not all, ability to be product on any level ...

Hi and thanks for your share Ricky61. I picked up the guitar and started trying to teach myself. It had been years since I had taken lessons and I found that when I was drunk, I had that desire. However, it was by ear....I would turn on pandora or whatever that music station is called and strum along to real musicians. Haven't touched the thing since being sober and sometimes wish I would have more on an interest in it.
My dad was an incredible artist. He painted alot of times when he was drunk and I remember the paintings just not looking the same. It was very sad.
Good luck with your drawing. I have been creative baking/cooking in my sobriety. It has been very rewarding for me...not monetary but it is help my self-esteem.
Long ago, I used to do many different things when under the influence of alcohol. At the time, my perception was that it allowed me to relax and let my creativity flow. I thought everything I did drunk was amazing. Later on I found out that was merely my perception. Alcoholism is a disease of deception. Once I finally worked the 12 Steps and experienced a spiritual awakening, I was doing things under the influence of a Higher Power. Those were the most amazing and miraculous things I've ever accomplished -- things that were far beyond my natural abilities. God can do what I cannot. Blessings to all, Mike D.
1. I used to drink and play keyboards in rock bands in the Hollywood rock scene in the 80's, then sobered up and continued doing that for several more years. It was waaay better sober than drunk. I never once had to run off stage and puke behind the PA system in the middle of a song after I got sober. The managers of the clubs seemed to really appreciate that.
2. I have always had a fascination with the idea of traveling all over the world and really experiencing what is out there, really getting to see the whole world. When I was drinking I used to sit on a bar stool in my favorite local bar and tell my drinking buddies about all the places I was going to travel to, but I never even had enough gas money to get out of town. At one point while I was still drinking I managed to scrape together a cheap trip to Mexico (I live in California, so it's about the easiest kind of traveling anybody can do from here) and it was a major disaster. I could have easily killed myself, and it was a truly miserable experience...... After I got sober I really did start traveling and so far I've been to over 40 countries on every continent except Antarctica. I've found AA all over the world and it has been an amazing adventure. Next up - Ecuador, traveling by train through the Andes from Quito to Cuenca. I already know how to find the meetings there.

Dave, I too did the music thing but not to the extent as yourself. I bought an electric guitar, a beautiful Gibson RD Artist, like new for $600 bucks back in '75 I think it was. I was just a beginner, not with drinking but, the whole guitar thing. I'd get drunk late at night, up in my upstairs bedroom (stole some of dad's booze) and cranked that old Crate amp up as high as it could go, I thought it sounded great, I was Jimi Hendrix
in my opinion. Well, the neighbors weren't so pleased, to put it lightly. I can still picture my dad yelling at me, "turn that thing DOWN !" all I could do was read his lips, it was that loud. I obliged and then I could hear him saying something about " the cops are gonna knock our door down." God bless him... Oh and I must add there was alot of puking going on then too...huh.
Now I live on a ranch and I could probably get away with that, but I love to play acoustic guitar almost every night now, for and hour or so and I keep it mellow. It is like meditation for me, it keeps me sane.
Speaking of puking, I used to go on a bus full of drunks, down to Oakland to watch the A's play. On one of those trips we all started drinking in the parking lot, in the morning, before we even got on the bus to go to the game. We loaded up, hit the highway, and off we go. I was sitting about halfway down the isle next to the window. I was looking out the window when I heard someone shout out " Look Out, Incoming !"
I looked toward the front of the bus and here comes this big guy with his face white as a sheet and cheeks bulging, and well, as you might imagine, he didn't make it to the restroom, we got showered, how nice.
So, when I travel, I sit up in the front of the bus, with my rain parka on, across from the big guy, and I give him plenty of space.
