I made a cake for the meeting last night and tried something different. It was box mix and frosting....one of those chocolate kinds which has three or four words to describe how chocolatey the chocolate is. Anyway, I didn't have quite enough of the canned frosting to cover the cake and it was thin. Since the cake was fairly thick, I had this great idea to melt a package of semi-sweet chocolate bits to use. I was just planning on using a funnel to control the "icing" and learned that this kind of chocolate doesn't go through a funnel. What a mess So then I just poured all the chocolate over the top and smoothed it as evenly as I could. It was pretty thick at that point. Well, then after a few minutes I realized that it was liable to be a gooey mess with all of that "icing", so I stuck it in the fridge. It hardened all right. So hard that at the meeting it broke all to pieces and in chunks. The topping separated from the cake and you could not get a metal fork into the topping, much less those cheap plastic forks I took. So the AA'ers had to use their fingers for the topping. The flavor wasn't bad at all and I just had to laugh at it, because by the time a couple of pieces were out of it, the thing looked a mess, and very unappealing. But it couldn't have been all that bad to others, because it was almost gone. (I just hope everybody that ate it still has all the teeth they came to the meeting with). I called it the "Candy Bar Cake"
If it was dark brown and had sugar, and tasted like chocolate, I'd eat it and be grateful ... LOL ... I'd use my fingers and simply be licking them all nite, LOL ... and in the end, I'd hope to still have a few teeth left ... ... ...
Hot 'n gooey or frozen, don't matter to me ...

I just love the picture of it and my smiles gonna crack my face...I completely agree with 2 granddaughters because of all of the time and meetings I've been to which contained coffee and sweets I've never heard an alcoholic...including myself...ask what is this? If it looks sweet, smells sweet, tastes sweet...LET'S DO THIS!!! LOL would have been nice to see a picture of it so that I could get a cyber piece of it. We often sweeten our Saturday and Sunday home groups...(((((hugs)))))
OMG....I only wished it looked like that Pappy. You posted a "Cinderella Cake"....this isn't too far off from what my Candy Bar Cake....(aka "ugly duckling cake").... looked like, but imagine the top as being hard and cracked---much like the ground looks like after an earthquake. (well, this kinda looks like an earthquake hit it too
From what I have read about those kinds of cakes is that they require right much skill to make. And they are expensive, too. I was wanting to make a real fancy one to take to AA, but I just figured who am I trying to impress? Myself? or Others? I think that it would be better to stick to the lower cost ones and if I have extra, to drop it in the basket where it will be used to get more W&W books
I never met a cake I didn't love. I bet it was delicious. Good for you for bringing a cake. It gives me an idea, I might try to bake one for a meeting sometime. HUGS.
LMAO june, ... I'm with ya on that one ... ... ...
And Mike, there you go, givin' me the urge to go to the freezer for a few scoops ... dag-gummit, I'm go'n to start gaining all that weight back that I lost during the move ....
Oh well, ... at least I'm sober, AND I'll remember it ...
Oh, BTY ? ... ... ... I saw a cake at the Publix deli today (seniors discount day, LOL) that looked a lot like the one I posted above ... they wanted $25 for it ... all I could do is drool ... bought some 'Long Johns' with custard filling instead ... (okay, a 'Long John' looks a lot like an Eclair, but is made from a different type batter ... and is also topped with chocolate ...)

Way to go June, it sure helps me. Also it gives me a sense of accomplishment because I would always be starting things and not finishing them, so it has helped me that way, too. And the coffee making...I need to volunteer to do that some more. I almost drank awhile back when I was having one of "THOSE" days...and I realized that I had volunteered to make coffee and I just couldn't not do the coffee--it would let so many people down. I also knew I couldn't go to a meeting drunk (which some people actually do, because there have been a few times I could smell it on people in the rooms). So I came to this board and ranted, prayed and accepted my crappy day for what it was, and went to the meeting and fulfilled my obligation. And best thing of all is I didn't drink . I am pretty sure I would have had I not had to make coffee.
Hey Pappy, $25 sounds reasonable for a cake similar to that. The fondue--which is the white coating on top of that cake--is very costly. So is the chocolate on top. I priced fondu at a Kroger's store and couldn't believe how high it is--at least for this gal's budget. I probably couldn't even get it to look close to the one pictured. I think you need special baker's tools to spread it on, and probably that was made by someone who is more experienced than me. When I was reading your description of the "Long Johns" I thought that sounded like an eclair. Never have heard of LJ's before. I searched pics just now and they look like eclairs too. Yummy! Hey and not only does that treat sound good, a pair of LJ's sounds pretty good too, cause it is colddddd here, guys and gals! And watching the news I cannot believe what Atlanta is going through with the traffic situation and mess.
Hey and there is one piece of that "cake" left which I made. I tried to heat a piece in the microwave and melt some of the clumps on top, but it wasn't nearly as good, but my teeth are thanking me--I think, as it is still so sweet. Hey Pappy, sounds like it is about time for that care package I told you about for you and your wife...and Valentine's Day is coming up. How bout some or perhaps a few pieces of or maybe a ????? Ha! Just trying to be funny and now, I am hungry!
Speaking of Long Johns, now that you mention it, it seems a little curious that I'm wearing them and eating them at the same time, LOL ... it was -2 degrees here yesterday morning and just 5 degrees this a.m. ... ... ... and at the store yesterday, a lady mentioned that her daughter was in Atlanta going to school ... I said 'boy', am I grateful that I just moved from there just in the last 2 months ... wow, 1200 accidents, baby born on the 'shut down' freeway, people stuck in their cars for up to 12 hours, thousands out of gas, kids stuck sleeping in the schools ... and the grid-lock continues ... yep, glad I missed it ...
Getting back to the goodies, ... it's a good thing I just ate breakfast, cause you'd be getting me all worked up again with the food talk ... I had cereal with a fresh ripe peach in it and 2 Long Johns ... ummmmm, good stuff ... (the peaches I got from Publix were from Chile, and I almost passed them up, but wow, they really taste like they just fell off the tree ... my taste buds were jumping for joy, LOL ....) ... Don't worry BTY, I DO have plenty to eat ... too much in fact ... but thanks for thinking of me ... love ya girl ...

Pappy I'm usually a standback kinda guy when the food looks too pretty...don't know how to handle it and so BTY's makes me want to use a shovel. LOL...That is a "dig right in" kinda cake...no questions, no guilt, no shame no withdrawals. Mud Pie, Cow Pie whatever...I'm all in!!
Ha! More like giant "cow patty", Jerry....Hey! But guess what? (Boy, I haven't used "guess what?" in ages! Almost as long as it has been since I used "boy" that way. ....anyway....after the AA meeting last night someone came up to me and asked if I would make another cake like that soon and say that they would "pay" me for a piece. I almost fell over hearing that. I let them know I will be glad to make another one, but I don't want any payment for it. (and the very strange thing is although you guys may think I am making this up...the guy is missing some of his teeth! Maybe the rest of the ones he has are a nuisance and he wants to get rid of them. HA! (I hope that doesn't sound rude of me.)
