1 yr sobriety question
Permalink

Hello Everyone

I am a grateful member of alanon, and have a question about the 1 yr sobriety date of a close friend.  He and I have known each other for many many years, but came to know each other in recovery this past year as he began working an AA program and I in Alanon.  His 1 yr sobriety date is coming up this week and I'm wondering other than 'congratulations, I'm so happy for you etc' is there something that would be especially meaningful to say?  Or something to make sure not to say?  I understand that the 1 yr is such a significant milestone; he means a lot to me and want to recognize this day.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

thank you

yanksfan

Welcome yanksfan....One year is a biggie. Why not take him to lunch? Isn't that what close friends do?....I don't know....It's fine to just congratulate him on his first sober birthday....And wish him many more. And congratulations to you on your recovery as well.

Well, here's what I do when a friend or sponsee celebrates one year, I'll let you decide if you think it's a good idea for yourself:

I search through the greeting card section for birthday cards that are intended for celebrating the birthday of a one-year-old kid. It doesn't take long to find one that has a little saying or poem that is both unintentionally appropriate and funny. The last time I did this I found one that said:

Look who's laughing, look who's playing,

Look who's having fun!

It's YOU!

You're turning ONE!

biggrin

MY sponsee loved it!

Buy him some AA literature. Books like "Pass it on", "AA comes of age", "Came to believe."

thats great news and congrats to you both,
my thought would be to attend his home group celebration meeting and be support while he shares his experience, strength and hope,
this is of course just my idea and what I did for friends and what has been done for me as well,
these other suggestions included all seem to be a great way to celebrate, Have Fun!
