You could say you've developed an allergy to it - since you have ;)

Be creative.

Maybe you could tell them your 'a***ole' breaks out and that you have pictures if they'd like to see. I know I was quite the a-ho at times when I drank!!!!!!!!!!!! It would not be a lie!!!! HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHHA~ just a joke here folks ;)

Oh boy - I better go to a meeting tonight LOLOLOL!

So I am on a great path now, doing very well, hopeful etc.  Here's my dilemma...

We became friendly with our neighbors when they moved in a year or so ago, then they had to move 12 hrs away because he had lost his job.  They finally sold the house so they are back in town one final time and are going to come over for dinner tonight.

He's a big beer drinker, we have always had quite a few when getting together.  He just texted me that he's got some Brown's beer (whatever that is) that he leaving with me and also a nice queen size bed which we can use.

I am not too worried about drinking tonight, I don't want to loose my momentum.  I know I won't drink.  Its just so early on in my recovery that of course I am worried, besides not being able to get to a meeting tonight as well, which I am also disappointed about as I really wanted to do my 90 in 90.

I don't know if I am embarrassed to just tell him I am not drinking anymore or what.

What would you do? This is the last time I will ever see them so I don't want to not have them over as they have been very nice to us.

Thoughts?

Just come up with an excuse, ANY excuse, for not taking any of that beer. As for missing a meeting to throw off your 90 in 90, well sometimes, life happens, but posting your thread awaiting answers can constitute a meeting. I'm sure others will agree.

Just say you stopped drinking. They will ask why. Just say you have quit. They ask again either why or "just Have one" and just say no you quit.

I wouldn't be embarrassed at all to tell others I am not drinking. When I was embarrassed was when I was a raving drunk and I made a complete fool of myself in front of others. If someone gets their feathers ruffled over me not drinking anymore, than that is their problem. I'm very proud of my sobriety.

I've had some time to think some more about this.. I am the one "obsessing" over it, I am sure its not a big deal to him.  I think just posting it out here helped me to get my thoughts out about it and also provide me some accountability so I don't have to come back tomorrow and throw another poor me party because I drank.  That will not be happening.

Before your friend shows up, tell him that you're not drinking, and thanks for the nice queen size bed, but he should give the beer to someone else who will be able to enjoy it.

As a general rule, on the rare occasions when someone offers me a drink, I just say 'no thanks' and that's almost always the end of it.

If they persist with 'are you sure?' or 'aw, come on, have a beer!' I just smile and say "no thanks, I've had enough". It's the truth.

Yup. I've heard of people like us saying they don't drink because they break out in spots. Spots like fleabag motels in Las Vegas or the drunk tank in Tijuana.

1. Ulcer 2. Antibiotics 3. Taking a hiatus because of something stupid I recently did 4. On a cleanse - these are all excuses I have made up when i don't feel like my recovery is someone else's business. Also, if they're decent people, most heavy drinkers who you tell you're taking a break probably have either done so themselves or wished they could. Just my two cents!

Dinner was nice, he showed up with an 18 pack, I put it in the fridge and got him one.  Through dinner I gave him a few more when he was empty, later after dinner he said, none for you tonight?  I just said, hopefully, god willing, none me me ever again.  He asked if I got into some trouble and I was honest and said troubles an understatement, alcohol has got the best of me and I can't put it in me anymore.  That was pretty much the end of it and I sent him home after a bit with the rest of his beer.

Mission accomplished, and I actually enjoyed the night... oh, so I can enjoy myself without booze! That's a good feeling to have right now.  I will sleep better tonight than I have in a while with a bit of a peaceful feeling inside.

Thank you all for your recommendations.

Back to my meetings tomorrow!

God Bless!

In the future just tell the person that you're on prescription medication and the pharmacist said in no uncertain terms that if you mix it with alcohol you'll surely die. I would think it would be pretty unlikely for anyone to continue to push a drink on you under those circumstances. It's kind of a lie but so is not admitting that you're an alcoholic.

I went to a wedding last week and one of my friends asked why I was not drinking. I told her I'm allergic to alchol. She said really!!!! I said yes, when I drink I brake out in stupid. She laughted and said good for you, and I had a great time being sober.

I was about to suggest honesty and then I read you response. That is exactly what I would have said and what I did say in similar situations. AWESOME JOB!!!

Nice job. I have never been one to make up excuses for why I'm not drinking, or say I'm allergic or anything else. Anyone who knows me without a doubt knows I'm a falling down drunk who is in recovery. Anyone else, I just say "I don't drink". People rarely question that. There are lots of folks who don't drink, I just never knew them before :)

The best little trick for going to any function where alcohol is being served....Is to either bring a little cooler of bottled water or whatever you like to drink....Of it's a bar setting...Order a soda with lime or something when you get there...And carry it around with you...Nobody will ever ask you if you want a drink if you have one in your hand....If you were still boozing you'd always have one in you hand anyway.

And I agree with chris....Everybody that knows me and cares about me...Already knows why I'm not drinking....For the ones that don't...I don't owe them any explanation. I'm not drinking today is fine.

Yep, that was a good one Marie ... I tell people I don't drink and if they ask why, ... I say I have an allergy to alcohol ... if I drink, I breakout in 'handcuffs' ...

I'll try not to talk about food but it is funny you said that because right before I clicked on this post I thought I am going to get my herb tea and then get some of that new ice cream I got yesterday....are you ready for this? It is "Moose Tracks" with...(ready yet??...) Vanilla ice cream with fudge and peanut butter cups. It was on sale and I just couldn't resist! Now I'll stop talking about food, Pappy.

OOOOh Boy!!! ...

That's one of my old favorites ... I've lost about 40 lbs in the last 4 months and it's mostly because I stopped the big bowls of Ice Cream ... Ask PC how he did it!!! ... ... ...

I'm an old fart and now you got me, 'literally drooling', ... ... ... ...

OKAY, time to sign off ... you can think what you will ... ... LOL

What goes around Pappy, you had me drooling over that "World's Best Cookies" recipe.....I'm signing off too because I never have gotton my tea or ice cream and it's getting late.
Hope you have a great one!
(P.S. It's so great being sober and talking about cookies and ice cream instead of stinky drinky, isn't it?)

I lost 20 pounds by quitting drinking and eating one meal a day. My evening "meal" consists of fruit smoothies, my healthy green drink and herb tea. Gotta stay away from the treats I make for the meetings and ice cream or I'll gain it all back...especially when I quit smoking because I hear that people eat more when they stop that.

d_willing, sorry to turn your posting around to food and hope you are doing alright.
