I know things like this typically come up in meetings and such, but I'm from Louisville, KY and the AA support here is great. I know everyone is different but we have meetings everyday, all day. Our local website (louisvilleaa.org) lists 446 meetings in the Louisville Area. All within about a 20 mile radius! Great for an alcoholic!
Just curious how others areas compare for support?

The closest "drop in anytime" happens to be a small school built about 1850. Lots of character and charm. There are scheduled meetings and people can usually find another aa there. Otherwise, meetings are available daily morning and evening. As we go further towards the city the meeting frequency increases. The local hospital gives our home group access twice a week for meetings and a couple of churches make their basements available. We are a small town, 9,000 people and the availability is great.
We have at least one or 2 meetings every day in the nearest city to me. I feel bad for people in the country or even where I grew up in central Wisconsin there was no AA. There is one meeting per week in my town. If I wasn't able to drive to the city, I don't know if I would have survived on that one meeting in the beginning. However... complimented with this online support - it's a whole new ball game. I know many people who live in the surrounding area's who do the drive for a while, but it gets to be too much and you never see them again. There are some downfalls to living up north more than just the awful weather. Overall - I think if people really want it - they will do the drive or whatever it takes. It cost me well over 200 dollars a week to go to AA every day to do my 90x90... between gas and babysitters, and that isn't counting lost work time as I stopped working for that time as well. You gotta feel you are worth it - and your life is worth it - and consider what you would do if you had cancer or something. I had to think of it that way - I would drive for Chemo and pay big bucks for that... had to realize it was life for death like that in the beginning, and even still - the disease fights back at that concept.
Good topic.

In Christchurch NZ, my home town, there are about 55 meetings a week, with at least one daytime meeting each day. Average meeting size would be about 10. Only about 4 could be called functioning groups that actually do more about tradition 5 than just hold a meeting. I'd be interested to know how many groups in your area with so many meetings.
I live in the San Francisco bay area and there are about a bazillion meetings a week here, all well attended. In fact, for folks who don't prefer gigantic meetings, it can be challenging to find small meetings (like fifteen people or less). Generally, meetings here tend to keep increasing in size until the regular weekly attendance fills the room, so the only way to find a small meeting is to find one that happens in a small room. Or of course you can go to a '12 & 12 study' meeting when they are reading about the traditions
For now, I'm in a medium sized city 20 mi south of Atlanta ... within a 10 mile radius of where I live, there are several daytime meetings and many evening/night meetings daily ... we are very blessed to have many good groups here ...

We have a meeting a day here in my little town. There are more fairly close by if you are willing to drive a bit though. I love my smallish home group. We rarely get more than 25 people at a meeting but there is quality sobriety there. I always hear what I need to hear. :)

Over 100 meetings a week within 15 minute drive from my house here in Wilmington, NC... 12 a day are held within 5 minutes of me. So, if I'm not getting to meetings its not because there isn't any! :)
Plenty of meetings here on the Seacoast in NH. There's morning, noon time and evening meetings within close proximity. Blessed we are! Our district which is small in size, has 77 meetings a week. That would average out to 7 per day.
......this thread reminded me - what brought me to this site a few weeks ago was the fact that I'm leaving for Uzbekistan in a couple of weeks for a three week trip and I have still not been able to find any AA resources at all for that entire country. I plan to stop in at one of the American Hospitals in Tashkent in hopes that the staff there will know about something, but it would be great to find some AA contact before I get there. I'll bump that old thread that I started.
Also in Florida...This place could be the AA capitol of the world.....Maybe because this state has no shortage of people to fill them.....I have a great variety in my town...Love it.
Generally speaking: The meetings out number the participants. The smaller meetings do serve a purpose, but it would be nice to see more newcomers from time to time. It makes sobriety feel more alive. Anyway, A.A. still has it's roots, and as far as I'm concerned; it's how we grow.
Okay there 'Bird-Brain' Bob, ... ... ... your 'chat room' needs a 'chairperson' or a 'moderator' ... ... ... and the best qualified would be your HP ... ... ... LOL
