I have not had a drop of alcohol in a week. It feels so unusual not going to the beer store since it is Friday. I'm doing good not drinking tonight, but I sure want a beer.
Sometimes the desire for a drink doesn't go away easily or quickly. Dr. Bob, one of the founders of AA had a desire for a drink for a long time after he got sober.
Eventually it does go away. The main thing is to make changes in your life that help you not slide back into your old patterns associated with drinking. So, starting a recovery program, going to meetings, talking to others in recovery, hanging out in recovery forums like this one, reading recovery-based literature, etc., are all good activities to help keep you away from a beer -- or away from 20 beers.
You are not alone. There are many others just like you. Here and in meet space. And we have managed to stay sober, one day at a time. You can do this too.
Congrats on one week without alcohol, Justin. Keep up the good work.
Weekends were the hardest for me at first. Lots of time to fill up. I went to lots of meetings and fellowship things. A typical Friday night now: I went to out to eat, went to movies, came home and read some and was asleep by 12:30. I go out to clubs and such sometimes but I took about a 2 year hiatus from that in early sobriety. Clubhouses are helpful and fun places to be for newcomers. They had lots of sober functions, fundraisers, committees...etc... It was good for me to actually be doing something other than sitting around "not drinking."
Congrats on the 6 days! Great start.

Its good to get your ideas and thoughts out on this board. Its amazing I still have these thoughts being around 4 months sober now, you just have to remember what you want, and being sober is the most important thing, once the first weekend has passed its easier. I recently walked by a liquor store I used to frequent and the girl was like hey I haven't seen you in a while.. I was just like yep:)
I think with time you will find its actually tougher to get drunk...................Congrats on the hard work. Tom
Thats been the case with me. Since taking the steps and having the resulting spiritual experiences, it seems I have about as much choice TO drink as I used to have NOT TO drink. That is no choice at all. And that is what was promised. I find myself in a position of neutrality, safe and protected. The drink problem has been removed. So long as I stay in fit spiritual condition.
