For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
- King James Bible "Authorized Version", Cambridge Edition
I'm not a religious person, and most definitely not a Christian. But when I saw this at 14 it burnt into me.
The answer has always been: nothing. It costs him.
I'm not going to get too deep on this, but AA gave me my soul back. I didn't even know I'd lost it, but once I found it I understood that verse. That is what had been missing. I'd chased everything but the real things, and the real thing was me. Without my soul I was nothing. With my soul I was everything.

The sway of alcohol over mankind is unquestionably due to its power to stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature, usually crushed to earth by the cold facts and dry criticisms of the sober hour. ---William James
There are many more 'wise' quotes in the Good Book ... and they are all worth searching for ... it was common for Dr. Bob to read from the book of James at nearly every meeting ... so much so they once thought of calling their group the 'James group' instead of AA ... ... ...

Who knows Frodo...Mark might have said that while at a meeting...you think? Ever read the life of Paul...originally the persecutor? Stopped doing "his" thing after getting knocked of of his horse and went into isolation for 3 years...I think he was going to meeting because after he came back into public life he sounded (to me) just like one of us trying to get it right.
