My name is Lorrie and I am an alcoholic. I got sober Sept. 1, 1998. I stayed sober for 8 years. I started drinking again in 2006, no reason really, it was easily available and I guess I got thirsty. I've been drinking ever since.
I am also a type 2 diabetic and I have been told by my Dr. that I must stop drinking. Or face consequences that will not be pretty or pleasant.
I did this once with a lot of help from treatment and even more help from A.A. I believe I can do this again, it's been 4 days. I know I can not do this alone. I have many Friends who have remained sober but they are all out of state, I live in a remote area and "real' meetings are going to be very difficult for me to attend I do not know my way around this site yet but I will keep trying.
Welcome to MIP Lorrie, ... ... ... glad you found us ...
I 'went back out' as they say too ... ... ... I had tried over and over to stick with the program but could not, not drink ... congrats on 4 days, that's a great start ... just remember that we take it one day at a time ... This is a great site to participate in ... views from men and women from all over ... as you spend time here, you'll learn that we are a 'close knit' group here ... we support each other through all different kinds of trials and changes ...
We pretty much all agree that 'face-to-face' meetings are necessary for accelerated growth in AA ... but sites like this help tremendously ... it's available 24/7 and being worldwide, there's often someone to talk to ... the 'chat room' is generally always available for 'real time' sharing if you wish ...
Go back and search a topic of interest and review some past posts ... this will allow you to get to know us better 'right off the bat' ... we also have PM's here (Personal Messaging) ... just go to 'User details' at the top right and click ... this is when you find someone you feel like sharing something privately with, without the whole 'board' listening in ... LOL ... then there's the 'Whiteboard' where you can share a thought with one person and you don't mind others seeing it ...
You should be over the worst of the 'detox' part soon ... then you can get to work ... go to a meeting when you can and as often as you can ... and get a sponsor so you have someone who can guide you through the steps ...
Any questions you have, feel free to jump right in ... the reason we're here is to support you ... it's what keeps us sober ...
Love you and God Bless, Pappy

Hey Lorrie, welcome! Thanks for telling your story. You helped me stay sober today.

It seems like you are navagating the site pretty well so far. Although it is best to be connected with meetings and people F2F, the AA book and program was much intened to be used as the sole way to recover from the disease as there where only some groups in NE Ohio and NYC at the time.
Plenty of opportunity to help others here at MIP.
Keep the Faith.

Aloha Lorrie welcome back. I believe that an alcoholic with 8 years sobriety who goes back out will take their program with them and drinking "in spite of". Welcome back and congradulations on the continuance of your sobriety. Hang around MIP and we will help you navigate until you will be helping someone else. When I was done the first time I was done period. I could not start drinking without getting a hangover on the first gulp and if I wanted to continue I had to drinking with the hangover which I was able to do. Alcohol would not cut thru that pain and so I had a physcial reason to stop. Also I had developed a strange greenish/yellowish color to my skin and couldn't come up with a believable excuse to explain it. Five years after I quit drinking my skin returned to it's natural tan. I've been in the program for quite a while and part of that journey includes helping to start meetings in rural areas where there were none and had the need. Today looking back at those meetings they are still going and older than 20 years. Giving service to others is a big part of recovery...you might later on want to start a meeting in your area.. Keep coming back to MIP...we can grow together. (((hugs)))
Welcome Lorrie! Glad you've found us! There are some really incredible people on this site - and it's a wonderful support in addition to live meetings. I hope you'll find writing here as therapeutic and enlightening as many of us have.

Welcome to this forum and welcome back to recovery. You're right, you cannot do it yourself. Come back and talk to us. Also, there are many online Alcoholics Anonymous meetings that are available. Here is one meeting site. It has 4 meetings a day:
