Aloha Sara and welcome to MIP also. Only one of the things I learned about AA when I reached the program was that it was a "we" program...one recovering alcoholic reaching out to pass on what they had learned to stay sober on to another wishing to have the same. It took trust and open mindedness for me to get beyond the fear of trying something I had no idea about much less want to do however they had what I wanted...to be able to live one day after another without drinking alcohol. The program works when you work it. My program didn't work so I adopted this one. Keep coming back. Keep reaching out and practice what has worked for others. ((((hugs))))

Hi Sara, ...
1st, ... I highly suggest you read the 1st 164 pages in the AA Big Book (Alcoholics Anonymous) ... It's a fairly quick read and you'll get the 'feeling' whether or not you belong with us or not ... look for what you can 'relate to' rather than looking for things you haven't experienced yet ...
The only requirement for becoming a member, is a desire to stop drinking ... if this is the case, then you have stumbled upon a 'solution' to all your problems ... Don't let your 'insecure' feelings at meetings keep you from going back ... we all felt much like that in the beginning ... My sponsor asked me one time if I was going to go and live 'my way of life' or if I was going to live 'our (the AA) way of life' ... I told him I don't want to live either one ... He said I didn't ask what you 'wanted' to do, I asked what you were 'going' to do ...
So ... I knew living 'my' 'way of life' was making me absolutely miserable ... my life had become unmanageable and 'out of control' ... I was losing family and friends and jobs and starting to lose my possessions ... I had approached the point in life where I had nothing left to live for, very, very depressed, even suicidal ... ... ...
We don't know much about you yet, but if alcohol seems to be controlling most of your thinking, then you DO belong here with us ... ... ... If you start thinking of having a drink during the middle of the day, or even in the morning, then develop a desire to drink to where you just can't wait to get that next one, then you are one of us ...
Be sure to come here and into the rooms of AA with an 'open mind' ... The mind is like a parachute, it only works if it is 'open' ... ... ...
Love you and God Bless,
Pappy

I'm glad you made it here. The early days can be rough, but getting through them will not just stop life getting crazier, but it'll make it so very much better than you thought possible.
You're not alone and all of us are here to help you just as others did for us.
