Programme in action in every day life

Well, I suppose that a big part of my recovery was and still is the 12 step programme and applying this in my life, as step 12 says.

So I manage a small team of technical draughtsmen, who also climb structures and work in hazardous locations on the structures. Every other climber (apart from managers) get height money - double time for every 15 minutes spent on s structure and wearing a full harness and away from a place of safety - but not my draughtsmen.

So one of the draughtsmen raised this anomaly with me and I said, so if you don't get height money, why are you going out on open steel? Send the guy who gets the allowance

He came back with a well crafted reply explaining that this could be done, but how it would increase delays as for example, send the man out to take photos, then send him back to take more because the first ones weren't good enough etc...

So rather than addressing the need to train the rigger to take photos to the required standard, I spoke to a colleague who was a. surpirsed and b. annoyed that my guys didn't get height money. He provided me with company policy, details on how to claim etc and I took this, presented the case to my manager, told him my people will in future claim height money and then told my team. But I also apologised for getting it wrong in th first place (step 10 anyone).

Result is my people are really chuffed that they now have parity with all the other climbers and the really nice bit was each one of them have called me or e mailed me to say thanks for helping them out. Apparantly they've been eligible for this payment for in some cases 25 years - I just hope they don't want it back dated - and this is the first time their manager has took the issue seriously.

How much will this cost the business? 6 draughtsmen, averaging 4 climbs a year, averaging 2 hours hazard time a climb - 6 man days pay a year, about £1200 all up.

Benefits to me - well I feel good anyway but of course, they all think I'm one of the good guys, so they'll likely go the extra yard for me when I need it.

Happy days.
