I am currently visiting at my parents' house, which of course is the simultaneously nostalgic and sometimes depressing root of so many of my experiences. As a little kid I had a biological father who was also a violent drunk. He is now out of the picture completely (for 20 years) but now my mom and step dad both drink to numb their pain. At least, that's how it seems. It's rarely to excess, but it starts as soon as things get tense. Anyway, my parents both know I'm an addict at this point and I'm starting to finally become okay with that because it feels more real in some ways than my relationship did with them before in which I would deny it while noticing them giving each other looks the drunker I got. Last night I looked closely into my eyes in the mirror and said: I am an addict. I am an alcoholic. It was a hard thing to do, despite doing it in meetings. But there was also something tremendously liberating in doing so. Anyway, I'm rambling, but wanted to name that experience. -Adam

Thanks Adam .... Yep, the 'healing process' cannot begin before 'acceptance' ... ... ... 'acceptance' makes it 'real' for us ... without it, we're just playing games with ourselves ...

Now trying the same thing, look in the mirror and say "I'm a gratefully recovering alcoholic/addict",  smile and know that you are on the right path. This process is extremely liberating.
