Humbling Meeting

Went to a Wed nite meeting that I don't go to very often. The normal people were there, with good topics.  About 15 mins into the meeting a guy, and a woman comr in. The guy was obviously in bad shape. The lady introduced herself as the sister of an alcoholic and the guy finally introduced himself as the brother. He went on to tell that he had been drinker for a long time, and had started from Fla. coming to Va. to visit his sister for Thanksgiving. He had not drank for 2 days, stopprd in NC. for lunch, woke up in the hospital. Said the Dr. had told him he was in a "alcohol withdrawl coma" His sister had driven down to pick him up along with his new meds. Somrthing for anxiety, something for cravings, and someting else. He was shaking and having sweats, and was in a bad way. He went on to say that his best friend, father and a uncle had all died of alcholism within the last 2 yrs. He was in tears telling us that the only thing in the world that we wanted, was to stop drinking. His sister told us that he was doing out patient Mon., Tue.,Thur., and Fri. and she had brought him to this Wen. nite meeting. After the meeting the group of about 15 people gathered around him all giving support and I spoke to the sister and told her how my own sister had gotten me into rehab, and that her brother was very lucky to have her. We all told him that he was moving in the fight direction, gave him a When and Where with our numbers on it. It brought back painful memories for me to hear this guy's story and his desire to stop. I am very glad that he is seeking help and is at the right place to get it.  I prayrd last nite for his success as I'm sure others did. Just a very humbling experience and it was good threapy to hear this message. Also great to see the "fellowship" gather around him with a out pour of support. I will not be successful without this program, and GOD!!!

I work at a rehab and it's a not so subtle reminder that I can be back there VERY quickly, and, but for the grace of God, I am not....today...

I love stories like this because, as much hurt as this man is experiencing right now, that is how much incredible joy and hope he is going to discover in sobriety.
