Selfishness-self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles.
Meetings are good for you and a sponsor is helpful. I attend meetings and have a sponsor, and it is suggested you do, but nobody makes anybody do anything in AA. But if I handed you the keys to a 747 could you fly it with no instruction or from a distance? hmmmmm. I'm glad you are here and I hope you keep coming back. Lots of good suggestions and information on this board. Good luck!
Going to meetings is nothing to be scared of, however, I sure was scared of it! Through the door you will find a whole bunch of other people who made it through the door knee's clanking just like you (for the most part we're all the same in that regard). Once you get over that hump, you will see that it's just ordinary people like you'd find at Walmart. All walks of life, some are doctors, some are teachers, some are unemployed, some are working at Walmart : ) All the kinds of people there are, can be affected by this same disease, and it gives us the wonderful opportunity to hang out with people we normally wouldn't. I never got to hang out with doctors before, but now, 2 of my closest acquaintances in AA wisk me away for coffee quite often. It's neat. I have also hung out with people who are just hanging on by a thread in life, and that's really eye opening as well. Makes me VERY grateful I have what I do in life, and can help others in need. Something I didn't do before AA.
So anyway - finding a sponsor will happen at one of these meetings, and pretty much anyone who has been through the 12 step process can be a sponsor. There is much literature and pamphlets available explaining most everything online or at the meeting. If you ask, you will get help and answers from almost anyone there. If someone can't sponsor you, they can help you find someone who can. Most people are much more welcoming and understanding than you could ever dream or expect anywhere else in the world - and if you don't hit a meeting with that kind of crowd the first time, find a different one. I didn't have a great experience at my very first meetings ever, but I had my head down and was terrified too. My second meeting was better, and each better following that as I became more comfortable and receptive to people who were reaching out a welcoming hand.
There is nothing that can hurt you at all by hanging out with a bunch of people trying to learn a better way of life, so just relax, and enjoy a cup of coffee : )

Thanks for everything. Peace and Love on your journey.
The easiest way to find a sponsor is to attend at least a few meetings and listen to those that share ... after a few meetings, you will come to see who it is that is comfortable staying sober and you will come to want that kind of 'peace and tranquility in your life too ... in other words, you will want what they have ... when you are ready, simply ask if they will sponsor you ... if so, then they will be your guide to achieve the type sobriety you seek ... (sponsors are initially set in place as 'temporary' ... it's not like you're married to them for life or anything ...)
This is the quickest way to grasp what the AA 'way of life' is all about ... and I highly recommend one ... asking for help is one of the most difficult things I ever did, but I never have regretted it ...
Great question, God Bless,
Pappy

Might be a good idea to be on the ground and somewhere like a sub-way or such. Airplanes do come down you know...tho I'll try to keep the pilot awake with loud music while the stewardesses and I get to know each other....I can hear the tower now..."747 .....NO YOU CANNOT MAKE ANOTHER SHORT FIELD LANDING FOR MORE CHIPS!!"...lol
