Sometimes it's like the universe is saying "Everything's ****ed anyway so what's a little bit of vodka going to hurt?" I can't be alone in this sentiment.

There's not a problem in the world today that a drink or a drug won't make worse!!!
P.S. Tipsy, you seem to have a very, very sad outlook on the world today ... why don't you try to focus more on what's right with the world rather than what's wrong with it ??? ... but I do agree with you that a 'little' alcohol wouldn't hurt anything, but try convincing an alcoholic of that ... a 'real' alcoholic knows beyond any doubt, that to drink that first drink is to open the door to a hundred more ... experience can be a cruel teacher ...

That would be a lame excuse to self sabotage. You are not alone in that sentiment as I am sure other active alcoholic looking for reasons to drink also think that way.
When bad things happen in the world and even to me, I no longer think "I might as well self sabotage and add my own negativity to this already bad situation.' That is insanity.

I can only suggest,if you are truly alcoholic(only you can answer that)you may be holding onto a Reservation(something we store in our program in order to allow us to pick up for whatever reason) by entertaining these thought patterns. If you have a Sponsor I would suggest to give them a shout and share your feelings.. This is explained more clearly in Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book,Chapter 3 More about Alcoholism.'If We are planning to stop drinking, there should(dont like must's) be no Reservations of any kind, nor any notions that we may someday be immune to alcohol. Now of course if we haven't reached that stage, acceptance and surrender then we may always renew our pain.I'm sure there are many who have that same thought pattern, or thru their own recoveries may have rustled with that thought, the difference is whether they picked up or not.. Peace man............

I did think like that when I was still drinking. I am SO GRATEFUL you posted this as a reminder how absolutely insane I was. I am SO grateful I do not have to think those types of things any longer thanks to the steps and the program. That was a miserable existence.

Not going to bury my head in the sand and pretend everything in the world is always great. It's been said that alcoholics (and probably man others) have a problem with "proportion" when it comes to negative events.
One killing by one wacko in the world is too many, but millions of kids go to school and come home safe all the other 200 school days a year, hopefully some are more grateful for that today.
The news would have us focusing on negative stuff 24/7, I guess that's what sells.?

I'm certainly grateful I'm not using these horrific events as excuses to drink. When I was drinking, everything and anything could've fallen into the 'F IT, might as well drink' catagory. The problem with that, for me, was that I never really got out of the muck... As Rob said, I had no sense of proportion. Also, I was pretty desensitized and numb to it all- yet I was overwhelmed by it all. I didn't truly feel anything or process the world around me. I didn't have the ability to. Yes, the world can be a cruel place that cannot be understood all of the time, but for myself, it's a nice change to be awake and aware instead of hiding out in a bottle of vodka. I dunno, just my take.

In my case at least, you are alone in your sentiment. There is absolutely nothing that a drink will make better in my life. I learned this through 25 years of research. On the other hand, my life continues to grow richer each and every day that I don't take that first drink. Tipsy, do you roll in here every few months just to try to get a rise out of people...not working, I really hope you get the help you need before it's too late.
I seem to recall you have a new infant also. Was that occurrence the universe being messed up? Or perhaps your alcoholism has you only focusing on negatives and reasons to self sabotage rather than what you have to be grateful for and reasons to be responsible.
