Sorry to hear Steve. :( I know two people with diabetes, one of whom is in the rooms. Both of whome have great lives. They tell me they just need to follow their treatment program and they do it now without thinking about it (I immediately knew what they meant. ).
Well, probably a bit of a shock to you! The good thing is they found it, addressed it, and already you're sugar levels are normalizing. Once you get used to the routine, whether it's 1 or 2, you'll begin to feel better. I'm sorry you have to go through this, but as SteveP said, you'll assimlate it into your life style and it'll become second nature. The good news is it's so very treatable these days with minimal disruption to your life. I hope that once you get used to the shock, that you'll find yourself feeling better in ways you didn't even realize the high sugar was affecting you. Do take care of yourself! chris
Hey Steve, sorry to hear that. My wife is a type 1 and has been for 22 years (20 years with me). She uses an insulin pump, which is a lot easier than using syringes 4 times a day. If you're lucky, you'll be a type 2 and can probably minimalize or eliminate the need to take insulin with diet and exercise. Best to get beyond the remorse of the "problem" and focus on the solution. It could be a heck of lot worse. If you treat your diabetes properly it won't slow you down a bit.
I was diagnosed about 8 years ago type 2. I take metformin (Glucofage) and I lost about 50 lbs since the diagnosis and so far the doc hasn't seen fit to change my regimen. Although it isn't going to get any better with age. If I'm not able to drop some more pounds, I could find myself on insulin any time now....
Thanks everyone, I went from 187 to 177 lbs in a month but mostly due to having my dentures and not being able to eat much. Please send prayers that its type 2, my dad has type 2 so Im hoping but whatever happens is Gods will. Not a great last few months, hypertension, dentures, now diabetes but at least the pills for my blood pressure are doing the job and I am at normal range now. Thanks again for the encouragement.

Thank you all for the prayers, Barisax, how did they know you were type 2? The doctor told me she couldnt tell unless I went to a specialist but I am uninsured so shes trying the metaformin for a week. She mentioned since Im young and not obese I might have type one however I dont know how they cant tell..

Steve, you need to go to see an endocrinologist. Don't mess around with this. Out of control diabetes can take out organs like eyes, kidneys and cause extremities, like hands and feet to be amputated. I can also cause coma and death.
My prayers are with you Steve ... ... My oldest son has diabetes ... for years he had to do the syringes ... now he's on just pills ... it's not a death sentence, so you'll be okay ... some good sharing on this thread ...

Thanks for all the prayers, just got back from drs. She said I am doing good, my #'s were down to 129 yesterday and she said due to the fact they lowered so much its type II. My blood pressure was the lowest its ever been, she said I am doing great and to follow up in Jan. Thanks again for all your prayers!!!! Just another reason NOT to pick up a drink :)

Not sure, I just assumed that because I went from being not diabetic to being diabetic in middle age, that it's type 2. Type 1 I don't think I'd be going along 8 years later on just metformin. I didn't have any tests done other than basic sugar and A1C. My A1C stays under 7, which is what he wasnts, and I don't worry about the daily ups and downs other that how I feel the effects. Eating in general saps my energy, such that if I really am planning on doing anything physical I will postpone eating, or eat very little.
When I was in the hospital they took me off the metformin - apparently its incompatible with some of the stuff they were injecting me with for the scans and all that - so they're rationing my carbs to the point I couldn't even order the miniscule fruit cup with lunch if I already had a piece of bread, whereas every day I eat a good size bowl of fruit for lunch normally. They were checking my sugar and giving me little insulin pops for just the slightest correction. I remember when I had my GB surgery, I came out of surgery after going nearly 24 hours no food, and my sugar was 171... so I got insulin for that. My Dr. thought that was a bit overreaction on their part, but I guess to the ICU/recovery people, diabetic is diabetic.
The other night I was 103 at bedtime. That's really, really good for me.
