For those of us that struggle in our recovery, this is the single statement that saved my life. My life was controlled by circumstances and situations which were not in my power to change. My sponsor was a very strong personality, who gave much of his time and effort to bring about lasting change in my life. The only requirement for recovery was to do the steps. My desire for stopping drinking bought me membership in AA. Now it was time for serious change.
And the important thing about this passage is that it is in the 9th step.
If we are painstaking about the amends process - that is when these 9th steps promises come true.
Good point. I like the fact that the 9th step promises are read at many meetings, but I wish they would be clear about them being the 9th step promises. Instead of the 12 promises.
First off there are hundreds of beautiful promises. We are selling ourselves short by calling THE 12 promises. And second, there are probably a ton of newcomers who hear that and wonder "What phase of my development?"
