Did a knee jerk reaction...

well actually it was a wake up reaction in the dentist chair this morning.  Yeppers ...broken bridge with the need to pull the anchor tooth blah blah blah.  I wanted to tell the young doc (they are all so young) that I was chemically tolerant but thought otherwise.  ("This ain't a party, it's a tooth pull and you're outta here in a few minutes for like forever")   Shoots me up and starts his work and "Owww!! that one hurt!"  He..."Let me add some more block" and then me "Hey that's some good stuff...you got any take out?".  Then  "Where in the hell did that thought come from?"   Did an investigation and sure enough...I am a chemically addicted person who is tolerant and I just hot a "double" while forgetting that I even let them all know that I've had chemical addiction problems in the past.   I was the only one surprised!!

Sorry gotta tell some of you a thing that I've learned...for me...the compulsion to get altered just never goes away and this disease I have runs itself all the time like a perpetual motion machine.  No I'm not following it up with anything other than excedrin...I'm doing review on the subject of relapse and will be talking with a fellow friend of mine who just did and picking his brain for "how'd I get back here".  Even when I know and know that I know I forget and I get blindsided.   Checking my HPs timecare making sure that I haven't sent HP home or on a trip.   Thanks for feedback...feel free.  Jerry F  2/8/79

I would definitely not consider that a relapse but that is something to think about for sure. I'm guessing your drinking and using did not occur in a dentist's chair in your active days.... It also didn't occur in the context of mega dental pain... Yeah the disease plays in, but your motives were not the same as purposely going out and getting messed up.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for sharing. It doesn't take much to get the mind wandering. I never thought about it but I guess we need to make sure of our spiritual fitness before we walk into the dentist office!

I must have a puritan dentist, I had 3 implants and a bone graf w/ stiches in my mouth etc, done a few years ago and all they did was a local numb and gave me script for some extra strength ibrupropin. I think I would have rather given birth if I had a choice :O

The pain sucked and the Ibrupropin didn't seem to help that much, but I made it through, I guess God was watching out for me.

My dentist knows a thing or too about recovery, so I'm okay there. That's why he's my dentist by the way.

i went to the dentist a few days ago for a filling. The novocaine has always had a bad effect on me, when drinking, that was a great way to get the drunk effect.

Now I ask the dentist if they are willing to do the work without novocaine - they ask why, I tell them that the novocaine makes me really ill, they always go for it, but they go very slowly and very carefully. Now maybe if they ever get to root work, that'd be different. Let's just say i take much better care of my teeth these days.

I tell all my health practitioners about my addiction & alcoholism and work out a plan-both from the recovery/relapse prevention angle and from the pain management angle --ahead of time (when it is absolutely necessary to have anesthesia or pain medication for the procedure-I go without after it's over-- with lots of support built in for after the surgery-or tooth pull-or whatever. So far they have all been amazingly well educated and trained to deal with it.
