AA Step Study for co-dependents / non-alcoholics?

Hi there,

I have recently joined a CoDA (Co-Dependents Anonymous) group in my town, and am eager to work the steps.  However, there are not many CoDA people out there, let alone actively working the steps.  I'd like to go to step-study meetings in my town, but these don't seem to exist for Al-Anon / CoDA people.  There isn't really a critical mass out there.

My question: Are non-alcoholics allowed to attend and actively participate in Open AA Step / Big Book meetings?  Is it frowned upon or accepted?

I actually use the 12x12 and Big Book in my own individual step-work recovery, and I feel we are all working the same steps with different vices.  I admit my life has become unmanageable because I am powerless over other people, rather than alcohol.  However, I don't want to do this if it's a faux pas.

Thanks,

Twingo

Aloha Twingo....from my past Al-Anon sponsor, "Find and use whatever is available to help gain and maintain your serenity/sobriety".  If you have the experience...start your own step meeting...Central Offices will help you do that.  I've done it several times and most of those meetings are still going.  Open AA meetings are "Open"...I've only been kicked out of closed ones in the past before I could honestly identify as alcoholic.  To thine own self be true and responsible.  Keep coming back.   smile

Hi Twingo,

Welcome to the MIP board. My experience in AA, it is alright for a non-alcoholic to attend any kind of open meeting. Typically a lot of active participation by non-AA's is frowned upon.

You may not experience this, but you asked so I'm giving you the "heads up". If you are going there to learn and study, I would think you will be mostly listening anyway. I will try to attach the schedual or link to some skype BB study groups online based on the Dallas Primary purpose groups. I heard they are very good.

Hope this can help. Rob

Thanks Rob and Jerry. Rob, that was my suspicion and I appreciate your input! Jerry, I agree- I gotta do what I gotta do. Thanks to both of your advice, I think I can figure out a way to learn and be respectful.
