Taking naps/sleeping is a form of checking out. That is what we did when drinking to not feel. Hence, I wanted frequent naps in early sobriety. It was not necessarily a bad thing cuz it's way better than drinking. I had a lot of noise going on in my head and laying down, shutting my eyes, and napping was helpful to get centered before I learned how to do that more through prayer, meditation, and other ways - restarting my day....

I've been mostly sober for about 6 months.  I did relapse for a few weeks.  I'm sober now for 2 and a half months, and I'm REAALLY sleepy all the time!  Is that normal?  Is it normal to start to feel sleepy after finally getting some good sleep for a while?  I was thinking that maybe it's because I'm not in a continual state of over tired, that my body is noticing when I'm just a little sleepy?

Anyway - it's just a question - I'd rather be sleepy than drunk for sure!

Things are getting a little stressful lately, all of my past drunken crap is flashing before my eyes all the time.  I need to get on with my 4th step.  I'm loosing faith that ALL this stuff can lifted off my shoulders.

I am just the opposite. My active mind keeps me awake. Whenever I get a sleepy reprieve, I grab it. I call them power naps. My sponsor got into the habit of sleeping for an hour during lunch. He wanted to be awake for the newcomer who needed his time. Take time off Natasha. You need it.

Napping or sleepy is a bonus for me!  I feel as though it's quality time to take care of my body.  Not for too long, but an 1hours feels just about right.  It's relaxing and refreshing for me.  So, my experience tells me it's normal and good for me.  My Sponsor naps every day.

" I'm loosing faith that ALL this stuff can lifted off my shoulders.  "

Please don't loose the faith before the miracle happens.  Keep moving your feet forward and more will be revealed.  wink  Take a look at your prior post.  Wisdom/experience from someone who stopped many times before the miracle happened.  confuse  Then I moved in a continuous forward motion(after some wreckage) and The Promises materialized.  smile

Congrats Tasha, on your accomplishments so far. You've been an inspiration to all of us dear, so keep that momentum going, okay Tasha.

Now as far as sleep goes, well, that's not at all easy. I have an over active imagination you see, so 'my' sleep patterns may vary. If I get 4 to 6 hours of sleep a day, that would be the norm for me.  Actually, it seems more like long naps to me than just sleep. So 'sleep' in a traditional sense doesn't really apply.

But as far as 'resting' goes, that dear is another matter altogether. I finally found rest for my weary soul, but only after I did my 4th step. Underneath all that turmoil was that real me trying to escape. I was tired, ashamed, and full of all kinds of resentments, and that was only the beginning. The truth behind my weariness was quite simple actually; I detested everything about myself and what I'd become.

Here's the thing though, I was a perfectionist, and my alcoholism made me feel imperfect. So I needed to forgive myself and then move on. Maybe there's a part of you that resents what you've become, or maybe you were so many things to so many people that it's finally catching up to you, who knows. Maybe, it's time for you to rest dear,  so do just that Tasha, ...rest.

Remember, there is something of extreme value that gets lost in translation somehow, and that is 'us', period. So take a time out dear and re-discover yourself again, okay. The world will still go on, and you dear will glow that much brighter, but only after you do what others have done. So start writing down your 4th step dear and get more sleep, okay. The more you write, the more you'll understand.

~God bless~

I quit drinking coffee 3 weeks ago, and diet coke 2 months ago. I am now sleeping 7.5 hours instead of 5-6. I get sleepy at 9:30 instead of 11-12. But I am definitely less montivated, but also less stressed. The reason quit coffee was sour stomach, but I've been wanting to get away from caffeine for awhile now. Next goal is to be sugar free. I've used artifical sweeteners for 30 years now, and have never drank "regular" soda, even when I was a teenager because some of my friends had rotten teeth from it. But I do crave sweets and it seems like quitting caffeine has amplified that.

Wow! Light bulb moment. I never thought of it that way. I have been so tired (thus my name smile). Emotionally, there is a lot going on in my life and I do like to a little time to quiet the noise.  Gotta work on checking back in with some new tools.

I haven't had a nap in 10 or more yrs! I'm hoping some day though! My grandma (90 this week) says it's the key to longevity! She's napped every chance she could get!
