 Great Topic ... ... ...

I believe the slogans come to mean different things for different people ... for instance ... :

1)   When I was new, my sponsor told me that my 'Thinking' was all wrong ... ... ... I said you put a sign up there on the wall that says to "Think, Think, Think" ... ... ... He said THAT'S for us!!!

2)   I was told that I'll never ever make any progress unless and until I surrender to the fact, and admit that I indeed have a problem with alcohol ... That I first had to concede the fact that I could not control my drinking ... AND most of all, THAT I needed help!!!

3)   I was told that absolutely nothing happened except by the Grace of God ... ... ... There would be NO me, and NO here, and NO 'Peace and Serenity' without God's Grace ...

4)   This tells me that I should 'forgive' others for their wrongs just as I would have them to 'forgive' me of mine ... ... ... and that I should stick to minding my own business rather than judging others for how I think they should be living their lives ...

And I do agree, it's a great day to be sober today! ... At least I won't 'MISS' out on the good and simple things to be grateful for today ...

God Bless,   Pappy

To me these mean

1.) think about not picking up the first drink

2.) don't project, don't get ahead of yourself, stay focused on today, do the next right thing

3.) everything about us is a gift, or grace, or mercy, be grateful

4.) don't be a hater

Hi Jackie,

Welcome to the MIP board! Good topic to bring up and it certainly got me thinking about what these slogans have come to mean to me.

What is the meanings of our Slogans hanging in our meeting rooms.

1-think-THINK-think = when the mental obsession hits, play the tape through to the bitter end. Think before you drink, pray go to a meeting,  call your sponsor

2-First things First= sobrity is our #1 priority, make sure your own house is in order builing a solid recovery foundation, don't project, stay in the "now"

3-By the Grace of God= gratitude for the gift of recovery we have been given....God did for us what we could not do for ourselves.  Humility

4- Live & let Live= quit playing God and trying to control the show...it doesn't work,  let go and let God,  wear the World like a loose garment.

 1) I never understood this one. My thinker wasn't working when I came in - my best thinking got me here. My thinker would never bring up the right thought when I most needed it to i.e. don't drink.

2) Fix the spiritual malady first, and the mental and emotional will follow.

3) I would not be the way I am without God's grace. I couldn't fix myself you see.

4) Live my life according to God's will as I understand it, and let others do the same.

"Stop listening to the thing upstairs, its broken"

^ That one helped me a lot.  Ive heard it at a couple meetings.  It means to stop listening to your brain after youve damaged it.. If you can do it properly you can find a million times more coherent peaceful state.

"One day at a time"  -dont live your life faster than one day at a time, because thats all were capable of.

Think, think, think - From the Big Book: "On awakening, we think about the 24 hours ahead. We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under such conditions, we can employ our mental faculties with assurance, after all, God gave us brains to use. Our thought life will be placed on a much higher plan when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.

Too, there was a little rhyme often used in the early days (pre-big book) that went:

Think, think, think;

past that first drink

First things first - references Matthew 6:23 - First seek the kingdom of heaven...

The other two were remnants from the Oxford Group

I love the one about God's grace. It doesn't have to be earned, it is a gift from the One who created us and available when we tune into that Power. I do think grace and mercy are different though. God's grace is when we get what we don't deserve and God's mercy is not getting what we do deserve. :)
