It's time for me to step out of the comfort zone.

I've been prevaricating, procrastinating and generally planning to move home for some time. About a year I thought, but a friend in the fellowship tells me I've been dancing round this for around 3 years.

Now God has aligned the planets for me. There are changes afoot at work, I'll either have a new job which is not geographic specific, i.e. I can work it from anywhere, or I'll have hte same job in a new location. That's no.1.

The property I wanted to buy is unaffordable, that's 2.

I've found a property I can afford, that's 3.

It's secluded without being isolated, that's 4.

It's NOT available until April, that's 5.

I'm managing a small team of people in GLasgow and will continue to do this for at least 6 months. That's 6.

The property is 10 minutes from a railway station and 20 miles from Glasgow, that's 7.

OK, so the divorce isn't complete yet, but a draft financial settlement is ready, that's 8.

So that's a whole solar system, including the Sun, all lined up.

Fears then. I'll be moving away from all that is familiar. I've lived in Yorkshire for every minute of my 55 years and 9 months. I have the fellowship here, my sponsor is a 15 minute drive away, people in hte fellowship know me. I know a few people in the fellowship up there, but it's a strong fellowship.

I'll be 150 miles away from my aged Mum. I am suffering a bit of financial insecurity - that's what happens when you treat yourself to a decent car though, and a new guitar and some new clothes, How the hell will I shift all my stuff - a house worth's of furniture, a motorbike, a car, 3 guitars etc. I'll have to set up a new GP and a new dentiast, chiropractor and massuese.....all do-able.

Benefits, reduced travelling for work, good location and it's rented so if I don't like it I can always do a u turn. I'm a bit familiar with the general area as I have bonds to the area through extended family. I've talked this through at length with my sponsor, I've examined my motives and they are sound and honest.

So tomorrow I'll be calling the estate agent and trying to set up a viewing. Wish me luck, but I know what's for me won't pass me by.

Bill, I have to agree with everyone on this. Maybe it's time for a change. It can't be a change of heart, because your heart is in the right place today. It's obviously a decision you've been considering for some time now, not just a day or two, but for awhile. So why not take a chance. It's not like you're taking a geographical cure or something? It does sound authentic Bill.  So I suggest you make the move and be done. We wish you the best sir and that goes for your mum too.

Go for it! A man needs a change of scenery. My father was a military man (Navy Pilot), and we moved 10 times (overseas and back) in my first 6 years. I get bored anywhere after about 2 years. that's why I'm constantly traveling. lol.

Mr.David - definitely NOT a geographic. We allus take our heads with us. But sometimes to protect and enhance what you have, you need to leave the past behind. This could be a bit more debris clearing.

i have two friends in the fellowship who have emigrated to Oz and another is seriously considering Miami. I'm only going 250 miles away, albeit to a country with it's own defined culture, language even money (it's still UK Sterling, but locally issued from Scottish banks and very pretty it is too.) Some of their laws are different epecially around property.

Sometimes a person runs towards a new life rahter than running away from the old one. That's how I feel.

The largest concern is, the quality of roads for motorcycle touring and proximity to the woods for the dirt bike. :P

Oh and how far to the beach some the ocassional bikini watching.  biggrin

I moved to Florida 20 years ago, at 3 years sober. It was and is very nice to live in an area where I have no drinking history. On my annual trips back to northern Virginia (Wash DC.) My memory is flooded with memories at every street corner. It's overwhelming and I can't imagine living in that town with all the constant reminders of alcohol induced stupidity, consequences, and ensuing feelings.
Not trying to "close the door on the past", just not wanting to live in the door frame witnessing it every day. This move was undeniably excellent in ways that are too many to count. I hope this is the case with your move too Bill. Enjoy the future.

I've been fortunate to tour extensively throughout Scotland for work over the past few months. there are parts of Scotland that only know me sober, parts that only know me drunk, parts that know both and parts where I am unknown. Where i'm looking is an unknown area.

there is an AA meeting every day, sometimes two a day, where i'm looking. Work colleagues are all saying it's a grand place to be, the property I'm looking at is secluded (two bedroom detached gatehouse on a castle's grounds) without being isolated. It's only 2 miles from a largeish town centre, with direct train links to the big city and the airports.

So i rang the estate agents who cannot let me view the property before easter, as the current tenant is refusing access for viewing. So patience is the order, eh?

Bikini watching! We're talking about a country that has two seasons here, winter, and 2 weeks in June. The roads are stunning and under used, the woods - well you need to be either fast and fearless or very good friends with the landowners, there are no public unsealed roads in scotland as far as I'm aware.

Or have an electric (quiet) dirtbike. You'd like it here Bill. We have 3, 10, and 80 thousand acre public parks for offroad bikes and atvs $25 per year (or free) . Here's one that I go to.
