The reality of drinking

I have a neighbor who is my age, 53. He is in the intensive care unit right now with liver failure and kidneys that have shut down. He is in a chemically induced coma to keep him comfortable.

This a result of his drinking and drug use. I drank with him a few times. In my struggle to become sober this is an example of what happens in stage 4. Just a couple of weeks ago we called 911 at 4am because he fell down a flight of cement steps and was so drunk he couldnt get up. The next day he didnt remember it.

Keep C  in your prayers. His mom is in her 80's and having a hard time. They have been our neighbors since I moved in here in 84. I am so sad and greatful at the same time. This prayer had brought me some comfort in this situation. I'd like to share it.

Look to this day
This very life of life
In its brief course lie all
The realities and verities of existence
The bliss of growth
The splendor of action
the glory of power--

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision
But today, well lived
Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well, therefore to this day

SANSKRIT PROVERB (PRAYER)

I did some program service this afternoon under the title of Public Outreach which for me over time has come to mean putting the word out about alcohol and alcoholism. I have been doing that for quite awhile and will continue to do it.  I add my voice to others so that someday maybe even manufacturing, distribution and sale will pull up short and ask "What is the consequence of what we are doing?"  There is a lot of fear from others in positions of value to even want to slow the problem down.   My drinking almost killed me on several occasions and that information is valuable and can be of help to others.  Such a cunning, powerful and baffling disease on so many levels.

I have C in my thoughts and prayers along with all alcoholics.  ((((hugs))))  smile
