Just wondering if anyone has been as annoyed by these as I have? Just reading about his drinking habits reminds me of how little the general public understands alcoholism and the signs of alcoholism. Anyone else?
GG
I just went and read some about him, the following is an excerpt from his memoir
"There was a time when I could reckon to outperform all but the most hardened imbibers, but I now drink relatively carefully." He described his current drinking routine on working-days as follows: "At about half past midday, a decent slug of Mr. Walker's amber restorative, cut with Perrier water (an ideal delivery system) and no ice. At luncheon, perhaps half a bottle of red wine: not always more but never less. Then back to the desk, and ready to repeat the treatment at the evening meal. No 'after dinner drinks' most especially nothing sweet and never, ever any brandy. 'Nightcaps' depend on how well the day went, but always the mixture as before. No mixing: no messing around with a gin here and a vodka there."[161]
Wow the insanity that dictates "careful drinking" speaks for itself
I say that he was a successful maintenance drinker but falling out at age 62, 14 year prior to the average life expectancy for white males, doesn't warrant it. RIP, Mr. Hitchens.
.......and he was describing his "working days"...... on his 'days off' he probably drank like i did. i was miserable with all day hangovers. so i just kept drinking to postpone and/or interrupt the hangovers. the poor guy was not willing to be willing to believe in a power greater than himself from what i heard in his interview..... jj
"Hard Drinkers" stopped bothering me a long time ago, hell I am even amused by stories such as Winston Churchill's escapades, walking around The White House naked, and upon being confronted by Roosevelt saying "As you can see Sir, I have nothing to hide"
I don't have the ability to be a "hard drinker" without consequences, but there -are- people who do, to a certain extent, my father was one, the heaviest drinker I have ever seen, about 25 years ago when drinking became troublesome for him he quit for 10 years, for the last 15 years he moderates, at one point quitting for another five years, he'll drink one 32 oz beer at the end of the day for some months, then going to two a day, when he starts gaining weight, he'll quit for a few months, then resume with one, pissed me off to no end for awhile, but when I got comfortable with my own alcoholism, other peoples drinking stopped being an issue.
If I get a resentment there is something I need to look at -in me- as per the spiritual axiom.
We are careful never to show intolerance or hatred of drinking as an institution. Experience shows that such an attitude is not helpful to anyone. Every new alcoholic looks for this spirit among us and is immensely relieved when he finds we are not witchburners. A spirit of intolerance might repel alcoholics whose lives could have been saved, had it not been for such stupidity. We would not even do the cause of temperate drinking any good, for not one drinker in a thousand likes to be told anything about alcohol by one who hates it.
Some day we hope that Alcoholics Anonymous will help the public to a better realization of the gravity of the alcoholic problem, but we shall be of little use if our attitude is one of bitterness or hostility. Drinkers will not stand for it.

Yea, I flunked out of "hard drinking" also. I still have some friends from HS and college that where hard drinkers then and still tip it pretty heavy at times.
Everybody has their story, just grateful to be sober and have had a lot of years to enjoy it.
Still sad to see people come into the rooms in their 50's and 60's and always a trail of destruction behind them. I can help them through the steps, but even though I'm 51 myself, I really can't relate much to what they have been through....but for the grace of God.

My problem is by the time I got half in the bag I'd want to go home and go to bed, which meant I often woke up at home and didn't remember how I got there. Frequently my truck would be parked perfectly in my stall but the battery would be dead because I left the headlights on. I used to get some what annoyed by the old time celebs like the rat packers who measured their manhood on their drinking ability.
