Yesterday I had one of my more common thoughts. After sobering up, after spending days in bed, anxiety ridden and depressed, not wanting to see or talk to anyone, I eventually feel better. So much better that I think I can drink again, and do.

This time though, I told myself, the reason you feel better is because you're not drinking! It seems obvious, a kind of "Duh!" moment, but in the past I'd drink anyway.

I really want to make this work. I know if I want sobriety, I can have it.  It's mine - I just have to put effort into it.

I am thankful that I am sober, that when I woke up this morning, I didn't have to ask my wife if every thing was ok the previous night. I don't have to wonder what I did.

Thanks for listening =)

Just surrender. You are powerless over drinking. Read more here:

Esteban, getting dry and getting sober are quite a bit different. It really takes about a year of continuous sobriety to get through all of the holidays, seasons, family functions, vacations ect... to learn how to stay and get comfortable with your sobriety. For me, it wasn't until I hit the 5 year mark that I really felt like I was out of the woods.

Aloha Esteban...I'm in support of you getting and staying sober.  I will not tell you how long it took for me to "get it" as I got it backwards from the start however Deans response to you is right on.  What I can share with you is this program is only done one day at a time.  The past is over and the Future hasn't arrived yet...live in the day and the moment.   (((hugs))) smile

Hi Estaban,
It looks like your higher power has worked a small miracle for you. He has given you an effective mental defence against the first drink. I like to think of it as a window of opportunity. The opportunity is to set about the business of making the changes that need to be made in order for you to have a long term happy sobriety. The problem is the window is sometimes only temporary, if the opportunity is not taken, your HP sometimes closes the window, withdraws your defence and sends you out for more "research". How do you take up the opportunity? Go to AA meetings, and find a sponsor who will take you through the steps. In my experience the alcoholic who earnestly does his honest best with this program will suceed and will enjoy rewards presently beyond his wildest dreams.

God bless,
MikeH

Okay MikeH, ...

There you go again ... Seems to me I think of these marvelous responses to a post and prepare my thoughts so I can post an inspirational message ... then when I'm ready, I see you've already posted almost exactly what I wanted to say ...

My biggest Problem??? .... The way you say what I wanted to say, seems to always come out better than the way mine sounded in my head ... You seem to always be a step or two or five ahead of me ... and then I sit here, and start laughing at myself for being a little 'child-like' ... I have learned a lot from you in a very short period of time ... I have learned that my thinking, though much improved and much more mature than it was, has still got a long ways to go ... When my mind gets back down to earth, I know that I am grateful for people like you who keep reminding me to practice 'humility', and not become a 'stuffed shirt' kind of guy ... Just wanted to say 'thank you' for being you ... and for sharing what I know to be the 'wisdom' I seek ...

May God Bless you and your family, both at home and in AA, love ya man,
Pappy

Thanks for the responses. It's been a good Holiday week for me. I say week because tomorrow I'll be having my third Thanksgiving dinner! Hope everyone has a great weekend!
