Can I get an online sponsor here? Does anyone do that? Thx.
Well you can but it's not recomended, it would be like getting an online teacher to fly a plane, sure someone with experience can give you some pointers, talk about common mistakes, but to really learn to fly that plane you need someone in that cockpit with you to help give you good orderly direction while things are going wrong
What would be suggested is using this site as -small- part of your recovery resources, a small part of your "support group", other parts being meetings (90 in 90), a real group of people in your support group (phone numbers from meetings from members of the same sex) and a sponsor, who's job is to take you through the 12 steps of The Program of Alcoholics Anonymous which we do in order to get a personality change sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism
Getting an online sponsor to treat alcoholism would be as dangerous as getting online help to jump out of planes by building a do it yourself parachute and harness, how to fold your parachute, how to fit the harness, how to pack an emergency chute, sure it -might- work but in all probability you are going to make some mistakes, do you want to find out about those mistake when you are 500 feet from the ground and it is approaching fast with it's inevitable consequences looming fast?
Your life is too important to trust to random strangers on the internet, and frankly, anyone who offered to sponsor you online by nature would be proving their inability to do so and proving their own incompetence and lack of understanding of what it is a sponsor does
We have sick people in AA, and we have ones who have gotten well, go find some real live alcoholics that have recovered from this disease and follow their directions
many of us tried to find an easier softer way, but we could not, with all of the earnestness at our command we BEG of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start
This is a progressive and life threatening disease that always gets worse, endangering and ruining your life as well as others, if you had cancer would you treat it with some quacks you met on the internet? Do not take this disease lightly, it WILL kill you

Seachelle, Lin Baba made some great points, however a sponsor is better then no sponsor, especially in the beginning. I'd try asking one of the wonderful ladies here to be a temp sponsor till you find one in the meetings.
