Interesting little technique for anxiety.

I tried something new this evening.  I tend to have problems with anxiety, envisioning the worst possible outcome for any situation, worrying about things to an unreasonable degree, etc.

Well this evening I was really worried about an encounter at work today, where a manager expressed some displeasure with the amount of progress on a couple of my projects.  I did have a plan to get all of them moving and set all that in motion, but I kept thinking the worst, i.e. "what if person X doesn't come through for me", "what if person Y fails to do what they said", etc.  I was nearly ready to throw up!

So instead of visualizing the worst possible outcomes, I started visualizing the BEST possible outcomes.  Person X responding quickly and cheerfully agreeing to participate.  Person Y doing what they said they would do, etc.  Heck, all those things are more likely anyway....  I felt MUCH better almost right away.

Somebody probably invented that technique years ago, but I just kind of stumbled on it.  Now I'm going to lift my mood further with some ice cream wink.gif

Cheers!

Thanks...zzworldontheweb for the insight.

It's a great feeling isn't it? Envisioning a promising outlook on future events rather than dwelling on the negative. The potential drawbacks of not micro-managing certain functions can be very misleading, especially if it's out of our control -like you said. The thing I like to do, similar to what you just mentioned, is to shed a light on the possibilities rather than being plagued by doubt or unbelief. The less involved I am in controlling certain situations, to seek a desired end, the more fail-proof the process becomes. Leading others by example not by intimidation was part of my learning curve and a lesson I had to learn the hard way. Optimism is a learned trait, my friend, and can benefit everyone involved -like you said. Thank you for reminding me of that -one situation at a time.

~God bless~

P.S. I hope you enjoyed the ice cream...I just did.

A little off topic for the board, but "New Thouqht" spirituality includes this kind of positive thinkinq, with the idea that the Universe will respond to our positive (and neqative) thouqhts and serve up whatever we qive our enerqy to. Another method is too be qrateful in advance for those outcomes you desire. We already have a tendency to think that way.. "I'll be happy when this or that happens...". We covert that to "I'm qrateful that this or that IS happeninq..." Rememberinq that qratitude equals happiness. Be qrateful for what is and what you wish it to be and you'll always be satisfied, which equals happy.

I find that sincere and honest prayer works best for me. Doesn't always work immediately, but it does always work!
