Smell of alcohol...

This is day 3 for me of being sober! Pretty proud, lol. I'm going to my first AA meeting today and I am a bundle of different emotions. I'm sure its going to be amazing, just reading all the posts about it gets me really excited. Then I worry, then I cry, and so on. I just want to get there even if I stand up in the back right by the door. I'm going.

I do have one really annoying thing that keeps happening to me.. I can smell alcohol... just sitting here I can smell it. There is none in sight. I've lit a candle, i've showered, I've blown my nose (haha, desperate much?) I can't get the smell to go away. Its quite annoying since its doing no good for my cravings. Any suggestions?

Much appreciated!

Jen

It might be coming out of you. It takes awhile to get it out of your system. Each day it will get better. As far as the meeting. Nothing will be required of you. Just go in grab a cup of coffee if you drink it find a place to sit and just relax and listen. You only do what is comfortable with you. Your excitement reminds me of myself.

I hope you find the smell icky bad and not tempting. I really hate the smell of it now.
The mind is a very powerful thing, especially when it comes to habits and addictions. This too shall pass.

I agree with Susie...Drink lots of water and cranberry juice and that will help flush toxins (and any lingering alcohol) from your system.

On another note and just in case you need this reminder...at 39 days sober I was still keeping cough syrup and mouthwash in the house that contained alcohol (for "emergency use" I told myself...lol) and my sponsor told me to dump it ALL down the drain and replace these items with alcohol-free varieties. It was surprisingly hard to do, but I think once I finally cleaned house of ALL alcohol it became real to me that I was done using. Done rationalizing. Done lying to myself. It also helps me to tell myself that "TODAY I will not drink." I can manage this thing One Day at a Time...no need to future trip and say, "I'll never drink again..." etc. Forever is WAY too big a concept for this alcoholic brain!...but I can deal with today.

Smile. It's a beautiful day, and we don't have to drink!~ Heather

Aloha Alone...Halfwolf hit it good for me...part of this disease is the affect it had on my subconscious where the imprint is soooo deep that after 21 years sober I started having drinking dreams...real real ones!!  The subconscious does the play back without a program...it runs when it wants to and smell is just part of it.  For me it is taste.  I can still taste the drinks I use to relish from time to time and it is now longer than 21 years.  Like my past sponsor use to tell me of the drinking dreams...."enjoy it. It is a freebie".  Physically up to 5 years after I stopped drinking my skin color was still a putrid "yellowish green" color and then It was gone.   I drank for a long time and now have more sober time than I did drinking time.  It will pass with practice.   Have a great meeting.  Get into the room, all the way in.  Find a chair and sit all the way down and listen with an open mind.   Keep coming back (((((hugs))))) smile

Indeed, it is coming out of your pores. This was done for me by day 6. I went to my first meeting on day 3 of sobriety. It was the best move I ever made in my life. Life is so much better now. Stick with this and follow through. There are great rewards to be had if you do the work.

hi Jen,  so glad you are coming alive right before our eyes!  coffee was a life save for me.  and i kept hard candy in my pocket, too, like lemon drops.  the lemon smell gave me a lift....  and i felt clean.  your excitement reminds me of my newest days of uncertainty but willingness to listen and learn.   bless you!   xxxooo  jj/sheila
