Does ADHD have a place in AA? Is AA supposed to cure it? Are Stims okay in AA? I'm interested in peoples opinions on the matter.

Thanks Much

I don't know what a "Stim" is SG and for me ADHD or ADD is a physical and mental problem with me that I have lived with for a long time.  It has it's benefits again for me because I have to work harder at getting and holding on to and living the program.  I have a powerful and active forgetter and if I am not constantly in and on program I find myself in no-man's land and in trouble without intention.  I get distracted...and when I get distracted I forget what is right before me and am off on a tangent.  I is habitual and it is cronic; again for me and at times it is dangerous.

Part of the pyschological profile for alcoholics which I have been introduced to is that characteristically we are "risk takers".  I am a risk taker...have always been one and one of the symptoms of that for me is being a reactor...I do without thinking...react without warning and without assessing risk involved and often find myself, when I behave this way, in explosive situations.  Life becomes hindsight and my ADD devalues that asset.  I forget.

I didn't forget to wake up in the program this morning as suggested from the elders.  I woke up in prayer and intention to live the principles and steps of this program.  I woke up knowing that my HP "is".  I woke up in practice.  As long as I live today in active practice...the chances are greater that I will not fall prey to my deficit attention and then not find myself revisiting a foreign place without know where or how I got there.

I don't know if ADHD or ADD is cureable...for me it is treatable with focus and intentional living.  My luck seems to be constantly negative and like a local fellow member told me the other day, "Jerry F it seems that if it wasn't for "bad" luck you'd have no luck at all."   There is a reason I am a poster boy for Murphy's Law...I never seem to pay enough attention, long enough.

Good thread.   smile

PS...and Oh!! I am also alcoholic...

Hi SG

And weome to MIP, how long have you been going to meetings, hope you dont mind my asking.

And the above question with this second paragragh, had nothing to do with the limited knowledge of ADHD, but it is written in the Book of Alcolohics Anonymous, some one will come in soon I hope, the Book states that any prescibled drug for any medical issue, is completely ok,  SG, want to say we do not have ANY hard and fast rules here, our goal is to help those that have a desire to quit drinking, support and love them, guide them into meetings, ask that same person to try and find a good sponsor, same sex, that is the Key to having a guide, help you work the 12 Steps of Recovery, into a life free of alcohol.

I believe I read earlier about you attending an AA Rehab, and your take on it was oh, AA is about a whole bunch of instructions on how to live Alcohol Free.  Hit the nail on the head, add to that all the incredible loving and caring recovery alcoholics that share this We Program.  We cannot do it alone, and only one day at a time.

Ther are a few People here, Pinkchip comes to mind, that I believe works with folks with ADHD. And is very helpful.

Again welcome to our little family here, looking forward to getting to know you.

OOPS SG, I REREAD YOUR POST, 5 YEARS, FANTASTIC!, SORRY FOR THEY MIX UP IN MY THINKER THIS MORNING  smile
