The Eye Opener - A book of daily readings

December 27

The average person has so much trouble in finding a satisfactory faith simply because the mind has difficulty visualizing a force so powerful as anthying but a very complex thing. He thinks he must understand it in order to acquire it and use it.

When we eat a meal, we believe that we shall digest it and that we will be strengthened and sustained by it. Yet few of us know the mysteries of the digestive functions, but we get just as much sustenance from our meals as those who do.

We, therefore, eat our meals on faith, and we would probably ruin our digestion if we tried to figure it out.

I like this reading because it shows me that in Step 2 I don't have to "define" a Power greater than myself. I just have to believe that "a" Power greater than ourselves could (maybe not at this instant) restore us (collectively and individually) to sanity. I will say that through many years in AA and many stumbles, I have never let go of the belief that something "could" restore me to sanity. And I still try not to define it too specifically.

I will add that it is my own self-will and failure to turn it over that has gotten me in trouble. I have in the past worked the Steps backward as they say, meaning after a time I reversed Step 3 (took my will back), Step 2 (allowed insanity to return), Step 1 (began to believe that I could drink and get away with it, that it would provide some sense of relief, that I had control or "power".)

You mean like the constant nannies telling us what we should and shouldn't eat, how much, when, etc... and of course what's "in" today is "out" tomorrow.  All about the money.  Now the concept of "moderate alcohol consumption is good for you" is back again.  That's usually a good excuse for somebody out there... LOL.  I've been eating stuffed turkey for 50 years... now you're supposed to bake the stuffing outside the bird because... why?  Same bird, same stuffing.  Maybe you're supposed to stuff it with something high in fiber.  Like cotton balls.  That makes it healthy!

Really though, when I hear the phrase "Bon Appetit" I always think of a James Bond movie... where Sean Connery (the only true Bond) has just dispatched a thug into a tank of hungry alligators, he wishes them a curt "bon appetit" before departing.

Truer words were never spoken.

Although I really wanted Adrian Paul to play Bond; I think he could have done it. Other "Bonds"? Ptew. bleh.gif

Wow, another Adrian Paul fan.  I like Adrian Paul and I'm a guy.  A straight guy... LOL.  I thought he was the only younger actor with the same stature and appeal as Connery.  I thought when I first saw him on Highlander, that he should be the next Bond.  Too bad it didn't happen.

It was a sad day for Bondom. Sad indeed.

Also his career stalled. I shake my head.
