Post up your videos,  tunes, lyrics, or poetry,  that have a realted message or express old ways of thinking.  Here's a couple from SRV's  last album  "In Step".  This came out the year that I got sober and I was lucky enough to see it live.

Caught up in a whirlwind, can't catch my breath.
Knee deep in hot water, broke out in cold sweat.
Can't catch a turtle, in this rat race.
Feels like I'm losing time, at a breakneck pace.

Afraid of my own shadow, in the face of grace.
Heart full of darkness, spotlight on my face.
There was love all around me, but I was looking for revenge.
Thank God it never found me, would have been the end.

Walkin' the tight rope, steppin on my friends
Walkin' the tight rope, was a shame and a sin.
Walkin' the tight rope, between wrong and right.
Walkin' the tight rope, both day and night.

Lookin' back in front of me, in the mirror's grin.
Through eyes of love I see, I'm really lookin at a friend
We've had all our problems, that's the way life is.
My heart goes out to others, who are there to make amends.

We have been walkin' the tightrope Trying to make it right
Walkin' the tightrope every day and every night
Walkin' the tightrope bring it all around.
Walkin' the tightrope from the lost to found.
Walkin' the tightrope streched around the world.
Walkin' the tightrope save the boys and girls.
Walkin' the tightrope let's make it right.
Walkin' the tightrope do it, do it tonight.
Walkin the tightrope

A wall of denial - is fallin' down
Wo it's fallin' so hard - down to the ground
Never knew something so strong could be washed away by tears
But this wall of denial was just built on fear

We've all had our demons from the garden of white lies
Dressed them amused them pullin' wool over our eyes
Go so far as to love them to keep from letting them go
All the while they we're killin' us but we couldn't let it show

No matter what the trouble we carry round inside
We're never safe from the truth but in the truth we can survive
When this wall of denial comes tumblin' down
Down to the ground

Simple things in life bring the greatest pleasure
A smile, a kiss, a little baby's laughter
It makes no difference if we run away in fear
The little things in life hold us so near

No matter what the trouble we carry round inside
(We're) never safe from the truth but in the truth we can survive
When this wall of denial comes tumblin' down
Yeah this wall of denial must tumble down
Down to the ground

My partying was getting out of control, this was not an uncommon scene

I got sober when the love of my life finally threw me out

I was so confused, my life was over

but then my life started getting better in AA, in the first 60 days bought a Nice BMW, scored an awesome Beach House, got a great job, and was adopted by a group of cutie sober girls, and then started dating a girl at Stanford who won a Gold Medal in The Olympics, yes those Olympics, when I ran into my girlfriend and she saw how well I was doing she made noises I didn't think it was possible for a human to make, this is what she had to say:

I keep the sculptures I made of the two of them where I see them every day

da girls.jpg

This was the exultation I felt:

I'm still Alive!!!!!!!!

Interesting that you bring up Stevie Ray Vaughn.  I found out I have only two degrees of separation from Stevie Ray, AA-wise.  Pretty cool.

One set of lyrics I remember are from Eric Clapton's "Journeyman" album - the song is called "Run So Far" and I think was co-written by George Harrison who also plays guitar.

You fly
Out as your smile wears thin
I sigh
Knowing the mess you're in
And you know that you can't get away
And you know you can't hide it from yourself

Lonely days, heavy heart
No escape, can only run so far

I know
Something I ought to say
Stuck here
Trying to find a way
And you know that you can't get away
And you know you can't hide it from yourself

Lonely nights, blue guitar
No way out, can only run so far

Lonesome tears, at the bar
One way street, can only run so far

I pray
That you might make it through
Those teardrops
Now seems a part of you
And you know that you can't get away
And you know you can't hide it from yourself

Fallin' down, under par
Can't get out, can only run so far

Lonely days, heavy heart
No escape, can only run so far

Lonesome tears, at the bar
One way street, can only run so far

Great topic - for those who like it a little heavier, the feast is a large one.

Metallica
Megadeth
Ozzy/Sabbath
Lot's more to choose from.

Megadeth even lifted some words right from the Big Book and worked them in a tune "A dark, black past, is my most valued possesion!". Metallica's latest effort, 'Death Magnetic' is pretty much entirely about how it was and how it is now. A theme of how hard it is to forgive ones self is also evident on the record.

It is a nearly inexhaustable supply when we examine the hard rock and metal themes. I watch alot of VH1Classic, and it's so cool to see these old rockers who have gotten sober, and when you hear them speak, you know they are in the program.

They must have taken the marbles away

Good morning, Worm your honor.
The crown will plainly show
The prisoner who now stands before you
Was caught red-handed showing feelings
Showing feelings of an almost human nature;
This will not do.
Call the schoolmaster!

I always said he'd come to no good
In the end your honor.
If they'd let me have my way I could
Have flayed him into shape.
But my hands were tied,
The bleeding hearts and artists
Let him get away with murder.
Let me hammer him today?

Crazy,
Toys in the attic I am crazy,
Truly gone fishing.
They must have taken my marbles away.
Crazy, toys in the attic he is crazy.

You little shit you're in it now,
I hope they throw away the key.
You should have talked to me more often
Than you did, but no! You had to go
Your own way, have you broken any
Homes up lately?
Just five minutes, Worm your honor,
Him and Me, alone.

Baaaaaaaaaabe!
Come to mother baby, let me hold you
In my arms.
M'lud I never wanted him to
Get in any trouble.
Why'd he ever have to leave me?
Worm, your honor, let me take him home.

Crazy,
Over the rainbow, I am crazy,
Bars in the window.
There must have been a door there in the wall
When I came in.
Crazy, over the rainbow, he is crazy.

The evidence before the court is
Incontrivertable, there's no need for
The jury to retire.
In all my years of judging
I have never heard before
Of someone more deserving
Of the full penaltie of law.
The way you made them suffer,
Your exquisite wife and mother,
Fills me with the urge to defecate!

Since, my friend, you have revealed your
Deepest fear,
I sentence you to be exposed before
Your peers.
Tear down the wall!

Tears of gratitude. First that I lived theses posts, I do not regret my past.
Second that I "broke on through to the other side".
Extraordinary gentlemen.

We don't regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it

A friend of mine just spent the last Thanksgiving she will spend with her mother, and it made me realize we never know when a chapter of our life ends, or when a new one will appear for that matter

We have the photos and memories though

we were young once...and I am thankful

bill in the upper right of "this box" are the "editing tools" , next to last in the middle row on the right is a "film clip" looking thing, right to the right of the "thought balloon" that says "spoiler", you can click on that and put the URL in there, OR

try this [.video= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcDXhD7hsn8]

and take out the "dot" in front of video

so it looks like

[video= youtube url here]

[-video=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcDXhD7hsn8]

try just the url as opposed to making it a link?

as in highlight in the address box with contr C, write [video=paste here using contr v]

Today's thought from Hazelden is:

Fill up your life.

One of the good things about the blues is their power to make me feel better. No matter how bad it gets in my little world, I can be pretty sure that B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, or Stevie Ray Vaughn has seen worse. Sometimes, it just feels good to vocalize all those bad feelings.

Bad things happen in life. Sometimes they are small annoyances; sometimes they are the major grief mongers. What matters is not what happens to us, but how we react to it. He left you. That is a fact. Now after you get done with the quart of rocky road that you are drowning your sorrows in, what are you going to do about it? You can sit around and complain to your friends about how unfair life is, or you can get up, put the empty bowl in the dishwasher, and go fill up your life.

Feelings are one of the blessings of being human. All of them. Sometimes we feel good; sometimes we feel bad. Take some time. Take some energy and be upset. Be aware of the feeling of being upset. But then get up, go out, and make positive use of your life.

God, help me put to positive use all of the feelings in my life.
