Hello!   My name is Andrew and I am an alcoholic.  It is time for me to give up this addiction.  I have been to a few AA meetings, but have not given up my beer just yet.  I had a hard time accepting the fact that I am an alcoholic.  I always thought alcholics were those who drank a bottle of hard liquour every day.  My problem is beer.  I can't have just one and when I crack that first one open each day, sometimes as early as 9:00AM, I can't stop drinking until I go to bed.  Yesterday was one of those days and I have been as sick as a dog today.  I am going to have to go sober, but I am terrified of the withdrawal symtoms.

I know it is going to be hard, but with the right mindset and a group of supporters, I can do it.

Wish me luck on my quest.

Andrew

Welcome Andrew...

You have joined a world wide family here. We are all sober alcoholics staying sober one day at a time...use the group here and at the f2f meeting for support. In order for things to get better you need to NOT drink. Try it our way for awhile. You might find that you like being sober.

If you don't have a big book yet, next meeting you go to ask for one and ask someone with alot of sobriety what you should read first.

Love, cheri

Thanks for the reply.  I already have a copy of the Big Book.  I have been going to AA meetings, but after my drinking last night, I was too sick today to make it to one.  That is one of the reasons I joined up here.  Now I have a support group online that I can access at any time.  I ache all over from vomitting today, yet I still went for a beer to "settle my stomache."  It is as much a mental addiction as it is a physical addiction.  Hopefully I will reach sobriety soon.  Congrats on your 7 months!

Andrew

Hey Andrew

A beer to settle your stomach is just the begining, next is beer in the middle of the night to sleep. Last time i picked up, it was pretty much around the clock for four days and thats nothing compared to what others have been thru. You can get off the train early and save yourself a lot of grief. Yep got to get up get a few into you just to stop the pukeing.  Been there it s--ks. One day at a time buddy.  Get to a meeting while your still hurting.

Good luck and come back  Rick

Hey Andrew,

Greetings from Aus. Keep your head in your hands for a few days (not the grog) and really have a good look at what drinking has done for you and to you. Making the decision to stop drinking isn't easy, but it can be done - and there are many here who have made exactly the same decision and are blazing trails into new lives. A step at a time...and we will share them.

Hang in there mate.

My wife and I soaked in the tub tonight and read "Bills Story."  It was amazing how many similarities I saw in my life.  This man became sober with the help of one individual, a few doctors, and eventually a few other addicts.  This gives me hope.  With the help of millions of people worldwide (the internet is an amazing thing) and a good local support group, I think I can kick this habit.  It might take time, but I am determined to do it.  My wife cried when she read my first post in this thread.  It was the first time I publicly admitted that I was an alcoholic.  Her tears were not of pain, but of emotion and a hope of a new beginning for our lives.  Things have been very stressful here since we just moved cross country and I don't have a job yet.  It has become too easy for me to waste my day drinking beer while she works 12 hour shifts in the emergency room.  I am going to try to stay busy around the house and kill my down time here to keep myself away from the beer.

Welcome Andrew, I'm glad you are here. Please keep posting. I , like others would suggest you get to AA meetings. If you are in a town that has lots of meetings, try making 90 meetings in 90 days. That's the standard suggestion, and I guess since your wife works in an ER,she would know if you need to go in for de-tox, or to see a Dr.

Don't drink today....

(((Hugs)))
