Read page 100-102 of your big book and ask yourself the same questions at the bottom of page 101.

Maybe the card games could be at your house instead??

I'd look first at their drinking. Was it anything like yours? If it was they could become very uncomfortable with your newly won sobriety and may try whatever it takes to get you to go back drinking with them. Your sobriety will serve only to tell them they have a problem too, and getting you to drink will allow them to stay in denial.

If they really are your friends AND social drinkers, ask them to make the game 'dry'. That ought to be a good test of both their true friendship and their drinking status. If they refuse I suggest you think twice about attending.

Good luck!

Barry

Its times like that when I remember an old saying, we need to "change our playgrounds and our playmates." I agree, invite them to your house and see what happens... or to a coffee shop... never know... Me, personally, even after all these years I wouldn't go... for the same reasons Cheri said pages 100-102.

Mate, I just had a farm full of drunken bikers and I had an absolute ball. You can do it - BUT - you have to know where your at, what you want and don't want, and have faith in your NO.

That doesn't come over night, but it does happen. When I first began entering the "no go zones" in my own lifestyle that I wasn't willing to surrender...I did so with an army of AA's behind me...if I couldn't find an army, I took along ONE strong one who knew exactly where I was at. Ask around at AA for a OSB who likes cards - you are gauranteed to find one.  If you have any doubt, don't do it. Just wait for the faith.

When you have that, you can do anything you want to do.
