One of the greatest messages that AA carries is that despite who I am, or how I feel, or what happened to me, I can still get well and lead a normal life. This is what encouraged me to stay and embark on the 12 step program. It did not require strength but a willingness to do the suggested program. The 12 step program is simple if followed and done like the AA book suggests. I could have got better a lot quicker if I had done these steps with some diligence, but my stupid ego got in the way and I squandered some valuable years of my life. The poor in spirit grasp this much quicker because they have overcome their intellectual handicaps. In all my life I could never grasp the simple concept of admitting defeat before the grace of God could act upon my life. I thank alcohol for one thing and that it made me reach this point in record time. The other great thing about the AA program is that it allows every individual, irrespective of his belief to slot into the fellowship and begin this journey, from galley to captain's table. I find good sponsorship is to show the newcomer that he can do it as well and cite examples of my life- what it was like, what happened and what it is like now.
