I've heard it said that the bottom is whereever you stop digging. A bottom just means the lowest point reached before climbing up. The real bottom bottom is death, and I'm glad when people stop before hitting the real bottom. I do think that what you're doing sounds reasonable to me.
About sponsors, I've seen newbies come in and attach themselves to the friendliest face in the room, or the one who raises his hand that s/he is available to be a sponsor because they want to put themselves into somebody's hands right away,,, and get into trouble because they didn't know that that person was a 2 Stepper (a person who did the 1st and 12th Steps only, or a 13th Stepper (looking for romantic involvement), or not really sober. I would listen at the meetings to everyone's shares and see whose sounds wise and true for a bit, and ask questions after the meeting, and get literature to read,, and then be in a better position to choose a good sponsor out of the bunch. If you really need a sponsor right away, one suggested way is to go to the chairperson after the meeting and ask the chairperson to recommend someone to you.
