I live in Texas, so it was in my back yard. My sponsor and I made a road trip. The most amazing AA event. I had the pleasure of standing, holding hands and saying he lords prayer with 65,000 alcoholics. My gratitude toward AA is overwhelming. I owe my life to alcoholics anonymous and will try my hardest to pay it back everyday with my actions. Three days of meetings and fellowship. The last day I greeted at a main entrance and had the most fun. I as bowed to from a Japanese woman, Most cool.
Me! Me! I went--it was great! I live in NJ, and it has been a good thirty-plus years since I've been in Texas. (Your weather sucked, BTW).
I think the volunteers and greeters were terrific. I started smiling the second I walked out of the secured area and saw people with signs that said "Friends of Bill W."
I'm already gearing up for the next one in Atlanta.
So it was about 65,000 attendees, wowee! I didn't go but love to hear about the experience, please share more. It motivates me to plan ahead for the next big one.
I posted a bit about the experience over here. I probably wouldn't even have considered going (got some huge expenses going on in my life), but my sponsor said she was going, it was gonna be awesome, we better make reservations now while we can get housing, etc. Blah blah blah. So I figured, why not. I made the reservations before I thought it over to death.
One of the nicest things about it for me was that it made me feel more connected to AA as a whole. It's kind of like how I imagine it would be to take a ride into space and get a glimpse of the much bigger universe of which we are only a teensy part.
Unless you were locked in your hotel room by yourself, it was literally impossible not to be in the company of the Fellowship. I went into a little art gallery and the owner had posted a sign, "Friend of Bill's works here."
Below is a link that has some info. It really showed me how global we are. I attended a session about AA in other countries. Mainly we all drink alike no matter where we are from, but we should be grateful for what we have. I will plan to make Georgia in 5 if I make it ad the good lord willing.
