Morning! This coming Saturday(22nd) director of Joseph's House , a facility for people recovering from substance abuse is putting on a 1st ever 'Walkway over the Hudson! to celebrate those in recovery.I live in upstate New York in a town called Poughkeepsie.Last year the community paved a burnt down railroad bridge that crossed the Hudson river and made it into a Walkway. It has been a great addition to our community and thousands of people have now taken part ,daily, in walking over this bridge, a 6700 foot span.My running club actually had an inagural 5K run to celebrate the event. We attracted over a 1000 runners. This weekend",I AM RECOVERY", the theme, will attract members of Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous and others celebrating recovery from substance abuse and addiction. There will be many agencies from thruout the area,Lexinton Center,Dutchess County Chemical Dependancy Clinic,North road Detox centers,St. FRANCIS ALCOHOL AND DETOX UNITS. I have spoken with my sponsor and my grandsponsor(both good friends also)and we all agreed this will be based on attraction ,not promotion and that our traditions and personal anonymity will remain intact while we celebrate life of the recovering addict(all inclusive)I have friends from AA and NA excited and happy that our community is receptive to our fellowships carrying the message of hope...Our sponcees will be coming along and sharing good ,clean fun and fellowship...Its going to be a large diner to accomodate 1000 people in recovery for coffee afterwards!!!!!

Wow I wish to heck I could drive up for that!!! (ohio) It sounds like a Grateful Dead party but without all the nasty drugs and alcohol!! LOL Have a BLAST and be sure to do some BBQ for me! (The heck with the running- I'll gladly walk though lol)
My community is very supportive of our recovery programs as well. Every time the ADM (Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health) Board petitions for money (levies) and campaigns for votes from the community, they get it. I am proud to live in a community where people GIVE A CRAP about getting addicts off the street and into recovery. What a blessing.
Not to detract from your wonderful announcement, but also, my area (Akron, OH) is really big on treatment over incarceration, and was one of the first 2 cities (us and Seattle) which adopted a Mental Health Court in the early 2000's. (I was a graduate!) It was considered that a lot of people who were jailed for drugs and alcohol might just have underlying depression, schiz, bipolar, PTSD, etc.... and anyone who had a prior history of such was offered this intensive program full of counseling, case management, psychiatry and ordered to attend AA or NA on a regular basis in lieu of conviction. The success rate was phenomenal, a "success" being considered when a person would go 30 months still active in the MHC program and no further scrapes with the law, taking their meds, attending 12 Step groups, etc. People did fall down, but had the support to get back up and were allowed to do so. I think the success rate was something in the 70%'s??? Amazing how a community can make a big mark by just accepting and being willing to HELP people with addictions.
So hooray for, what I always thought was called- "Per-kipp-see" LOL

Hey Joni! yes we actually have up here a program called Drug Court.Instead of incarceration they offer you intensive programing and you come to court and do weeks and move up the ladder.Takes about on average 18 months to two years to complete Your record is expunged, but they can't be hardcore felonies....My son was offered the program, did 2 different Rehabs and the finally a TC(therapuetic community) he did 6 months there and then got put out for making a tattoo gun and doing art for commisary. He did rest of his time in county jail..The program is great but very hard and not for those who dont want to do the work.Doesnt have a good success rate but it is an opportunity instead of jail.Lot of people I know chose jail over the program.Im still for it but its the old scenario,if you ain't done yet nothing gonna work!I also am glad that the system realizes were letting murderers out on parole and addicts doing hard time. Not a lot of programs up here able to work with dual diagnosis but getting better..Yup there was actually a song on he radio up here, can't remember bands name sang"Poughkeepsie city of sin ,city I live in!! CATCHY HOOK! talk to you on the rebound, glad your doing well........peace
