Wisdom to know the difference

Okay - since coming into AA and trying to live a sober life I've yielded on many, many points of contention and responded passively to many situations, filing them under "the things i cannot change" and not putting many things into the "change the things I can." Now I have to make a choice, and I don't know if I have the wisdom.

It's about a political issue, a House Bill that The Senate has already approved and the Presidential administration supports. It doesn't have a vote date yet. This bill, if passed into law, could eliminate my trade as I know it and potentially bankrupt my employer.

The Old Rob would have put as much energy as he could afford into fighting this thing tooth and nail. I would have considered it my duty as an American Citizen to make my voice heard.

I will pray for wisdom. I don't expect God to fight my fight for me.

From a sobriety maintenance standpoint, how far can courage take me before it turns into foolhardiness?

Peace,
Rob

The only thing I know is we do the best we can and let go of the results

The way I heard it described is my job is to fling sh*t against the wall but I'm not in charge of adhesion

That would be God's job

Them thar Arab fellers have a saying about it as well

Praise Allah but tie your camel to a post

which suggests checking your options in case of the vote not going your way

In which case we return to the opening line

Do the next right thing and let go of the results, we also pause and ask God for inspiration, described here:

On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all God gave us brains to use. Our thought- life will be placed on a much higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.

In thinking about our day we may face indecision. We may not be able to determine which course to take. Here we ask God for inspiration, an intuitive thought or a decision. We relax and take it easy. We don't struggle. We are often surprised how the right answers come after we have tried this for a while. What used to be the hunch or the occasional inspiration gradually becomes a working part of the mind. Being still inexperienced and having just made conscious contact with God, it is not probable that we are going to be inspired at all times. We might pay for this presumption in all sorts of absurd actions and ideas. Nevertheless, we find that our thinking will, as time passes, be more and more on the plane of inspiration. We come to rely upon it.

Rob, I am pretty politically savvy, (although I tend to follow a particualr political school of thought, though not to a tee....) and if you want to PM me with more specifics, I would be interested in hearing them.

AA has changed the way I view certain political situations. My view on health care in general has changed since AA. (Not going to go into it here, don't want to start catching heads on fire, including my own!! LOL)

But it sounds as if something pretty serious is at stake here. Don't forget to PRAY for guidance. And find someone in AA, if you can, who understands and is interested in the cause.

My state was considering allowing a foreign company to BUY the rights to teh Ohio Turnpike. They would give the state a big bunch of money in a lump sum, and then not only reap all the profits and set their own prices for tolls, but they would be in charge of the kind of maintenance done on the roadway. My husband works for a company that is contracted with the current Ohio Turnpike Commission, abd were this foreign company to purchase the "Pike", his company would have been in jeopardy of losing 70% if their business to a lesser-bidding company, who woudl be ill-equipped to handle the kind of chemical spills and catastrophes that happen there on a regular basis. So not only was it amatter of Public Health, it meant possibly cutting the workforce down to less than half in that company, which employs hard working blue collar families, affording them a good honest wage, medical coverage and the like.

I understand wanting to get involved. I don't know to what extent you are willing to or capable of fighting your battle though... how woudl it impact your fmaily if you didn't? How wil it impact your family and your sobriety if you DO? What if you fight the good fight and your cause loses? Are you willing to have realistic expectations? These are sobriety-related questions that, in my opinion, are very important to ask ourselves before taking any new major cause on.

Rob,

I agree with AGO.

Just because we are recovering alcoholics does not mean that we cease being citizens of our country.   We do and should have thoughts about what we feel our government should and should not do.   We can and should let our ideas be heard.

As alcoholics we need to accept the outcome no matter what however.   Remember resentments are our number one problem.  So after working for your issue do not risk your sobriety if your side does not win.  Every political decision has a winning side and a losing side.

You can be on the losing side and be a winner if you keep your sobriety.

Larry,

Resentments are like stray cats, they will go away if you don't feed them.

When I started earning my recovery one of the things I learned to re-do was laugh.
Even the word politics cracks me up.  I won't belittle your concern just had to
mention how loose and relaxed I got after the "fear of" was gone.

I learned to ask myself a question when I was facing investigation prior to a choice
and the question was, "Could I be wrong".  That question helped the investigation and
lessen the reaction to what I was being concerned about.   Knowledge is security and
power and the truth does set me free.

Continue to hold it up to the light of the serenity prayer and gain new perspectives
of the situation.

Good thread Rob, thanks.   smile

well today is polling day, the day where we collectively get to choose which set of lying thieving conniving manipulative double dealing deceitful self serving self seeking drunks get to run t'country.

apparantly if the Tories get in they'l have a state funeral for Maggie Thatcher. If labour get in they'll have a state funeral for Maggie but won't wait for her to die. there's 20 000 ex miners volunteered to dig her grave. They want to make sure it's good and deep.

(resentments anyone?)

How can you tell when a politician is lying? His lips move!

Do what you think is right. I'll do what I think is right.

Trust in God and keep your powder dry.

Great post Rob. As others have said on here, AA is not about being a door-mat or relinquishing your citizenship and rights. "Acceptance is the answer" doesn't mean that you just sit there like a stone and let things happen to you. It was just that kind of approach to life that helped feed my passive aggressiveness (a big ol character defect of mine) which in turn I treated by what I thought was solace in the pubs.

A while back, I was on another AA forum when some guys were more or less saying that "acceptance is the answer" meant that we even had to let people keep smacking us in the head. I literally lol'd when an old-timer guy retorted along the lines of "let's say that someone was siphoning off my bank account -- just sitting back and accepting that would be lunacy."

One thing though: are you sure that this bill will shut down your business? I work in the law. There are a lot of people out there who, with ANY legislative initiative will say that this means that all life will cease as we know it. I was involved in dealing with some lobbying on one of these issues about 5 years ago. The measure in question was passed, and it literally has had NO discernible impact on the area in question. I'm not doubting you, just relaying my own experience with these things.

But being in AA does not preclude us from getting involved in politics. Heck, the Big Book even goes into great fanfare about how AA number 3 got involved a political campaign in recovery, etc. And there have been a number of high-profile politicians who have been in AA (we won't get into the anonymity issues) and I'll bet many more who have chosen to preserve their anonymity.

I find its much easier to just listen to Rush Limbaugh and just do whatever he says. That way I do not have to do any actual thinking.

I have chosen to do as much as I can about it...and accept the outcome.

Thank you all - VERY MUCH!! My employer & I are working together to form and/or join a lobbying alliance with other like businesses. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Ya see, it's the Performance Rights Act. The rhetoric behind the act is nice "musicians should get more money for their work." Sure. I like that. Where is the money going to come from? AM & FM radio stations will pay either a "per song tax" or if they make less than $1.25 million a year (us) a flat fee of $5000 per station annually. We already pay out over 15% of our gross revenue in licensing, copywrite & ASCAP fees.

Commercial radio hasn't changed in 88 years. The station plays SOME of an artist's music, thereby promoting the artist who then makes money on their CD/MP3/concert ticket sales. The music is entertainment which listeners like. Advertisers pay to have ads during the day interspersedwith the music and other stuff like news, weather, sports, ag reports, etc.

The station makes money from the ad sales and other brilliant promotional ideas that we creative blow-hards come up with.

Advertiser wins, listener wins, station wins and MUSICIAN WINS!!
Honestly...how much music have you bought because you heard some of it on the radio? Looking at MY MP3 Player/CD/LP/Cassette collection the answer is "almost all of it."

There. That's what's got my knickers in a knot.

So much for "no opinion on outside issues." WAIT - let me whip out a disclaimer...(read it in your head REALLY fast).

"The opinions expressed above are the sole intellectual property of Rob and are not the opinions of AA, MIP or any related organizations."

Peace,
Rob

Hey AM,
I just looked at the bill and its supporters and it seems to be all the usual characters. Just on the face of it, I wrote a quick email to Senator Jim Demint to be on the lookout and vote down this bill. Good Luck!

Wow - it sounds like you boys over there have been listening to the way we do it over here - if you play recorded music publicly, you gotta pay the artist, that means if you have a radio station, you pay per play (about 10 cents a record). If you have a bar with a jukebox, or have a background music system, you need a licence and pay a flat fee to the Performing Rights Society, who pay out the artists.

IMO - seems fair and reasonable.

as for how much music do I buy as a result of hearing it on the radio - not that much as most radio over here is commercial pop pap. Most of my music purchasing comes from Advertising, Gigs, friends recomendations and a desire to actually hear the music I 'listened' to when off my face on Brown Ale.

Having listened to British Radio...I agree. Status Quo is rubbish and the ONLY way they'll make $ is to get 10p per radio or BBC play.

Now Marillion...that's better. The point is...the US system of radio has resulted in a HUGE range and variety of music for listeners to choose from as advertisers chase every concievable demographic. As a result, if an artist's music has any "it", whatever "it" is...they get free advertising and they sell CDs. If their music is crap, the listeners let us know, and we don't play them.

Thanks Tom!

Peace,
Rob

The Quo are pretty clever in that they tailor their outp[ut to radio to be as commercial as possible and it generally pop pap. But see 'em live for the real dirty blues experience.

We have a few niche programmes on BBC Radio 2 - Paul Jones Blues hour, Mike Harding's Folk Hour and Whispering Bob Harris Country Hour, plus a few one offs, like history of punk, history of ska, but in the main it's corporate tosh aimed at age related demographics.

radio 1 - yoof market - chart pap, nothing more than 6 months post release, dance music in teh evening

radio 2 - aimed at 35 to 55 - a broader range of music but still chart oriented, just over a greater period of time, none of that noisy modern chart stuff, some reasonable programming inn the evening.

radio 3 - classical, stories, radio plays, book a tbedtime. (thank you Nanny)

radio 4 - news, current affairs and discussion programmes.

local radio either follows Radio 1 or radio 2 model.

independant radio usually follows r1 or r2 model.
