Our local AA clubhouse organised a dinner and dance today. It is a platform for newcomers to experience fun without alcohol. My wife and I had a lot of fun and humour at the dinner tables and on the dance floor. Everyone enjoyed themselves. But just underneath is an earnestness to recover and get well through the steps.
We use these functions to see our sponsees recover and enjoy themselves, both AA and Alanon.
We alcoholics are a fun loving crowd. Who says we cannot enjoy life without alcohol.

I got sober in my twenties and there was about 30 of us or so that ran around in a big pack.

I got to relive adolescence, high school, dating, etc in a very real way, I had skipped those, we would have 70's parties, dances, movie nights, we went on dates, made out, had Beach Parties

I got to have the childhood I never had, then become an adult

AA dances can be a blast, and I still prefer AA thanksgiving in Strawberry to being with my family, as sad as that sounds, it's not, there are like 500 of us and we are all there because we want to be there not because we have to be there

I may not have had a happy childhood but I certainly had a long one. (LOL)

Actually as a Shriner with my little parade cars I suppose you could make a case that I am still in my childhood.  Sure is fun anyway.

It came as a surprise in my early sobriet that I could do thing like dance without liquid courage.  Its Greeeaaate to be Sober!!!

The events we have down here as fundraisers and such for Roundup...and the actual round up are way more fun than drinking.

My first AA event was the Chili Cookoff...like 200 people. Way fun and a good fundraiser too.

I'm starting to realize that I never had fun WITH alcohol: puking, getting into fights, blowing all of my cash, threatening people, waking up with strange women in dangerous places, pissing people off and making enemies, getting laughed at, sitting alone at parties...yeah, it was all a blast! How can I have fun without booze? ;)

Had an American thanksgiving at my sponsor's house with a whole bunch of folks from my home group. That was great!

Hi There Gonee,

Happy you had a great time.

Your Post title threw me a little, cause I dont have any recall of fun, well maybe in the first years, but that was fake fun anyway.......but the last thing I think about with the term Alcohol, Alcoholism, would be the word "fun".

But that is just me....I only drank to feel like I somehow belonged to the human race......

Oops sorry, just felt like I was taking the fun out of this Post, party pooper me, haha.

Life can be a lot of fun, and laughing is my favorite way to celebrate life.

Joy and sorrow, fun and pain, night and day, they all just keep us on our toes, waiting for the next feeling to show up...biggrin

Could not experience one of the above without God's Gift of Sobriety, one day at a time....Thank You GOD for today. and for Gonee too....

Happy FUN day to you my dear friend....

Tonicakes

i remember those days when anything was fun without drinking, it is sad when u get to the point where you cant do an activity without having to drink. i know i can have fun without having a drink.....and it usually ends up with everyone having a better time overall. it is crazy how many times i should have seen the big picture, but i guess late is better then never...i just hope i am not too late.
