Have your musical tastes changed?

mine have. They've got broader. I still like the old rythmn and booze but I've started to listen to a lot of stuff that was background noise when I was drinking and I hear the words and the chord progressions and the style differently.

Currently spending a lot of time listening to Billy Bragg. Simple choppy chords, well left wing politically, a real storyteller if you know your social history.

Also picking up on a lot of gospel and of course, Johnny Cash' later recordings.

I started a playlist on my iPod of "recovery songs", and I got lots of Johnny Cash on there. Man, that song "Came to Believe" makes me cry.

Hey Bill .I have been drumming in and out of bands since I was around 12 years old and I still love just about all styles and tastes of music.I do like to play Jazz ,funk ,rock and rhythm and blues though..I am thinking of joining our church 'Praise and Worship' BAND  as to give back for the ability God has allowed me to have..Music has gone to such a level now ,incerdible players but "hard fro me to get a grip on screaming metal.blast beat, etc.Funny like you said bill.,sitting in a bar never really heard  much of any words, kinda just the drone of backround noise I still make up lyrics to music I heard.....I listen to a lot of meditation music,Buddhist chants(I,m not Buddhist,New Age music, intricate fusion ,if not to out of space and old Big Band stuff)pLAYED IN cONTRY rOCK BANDS THAT WOULD COVER cash, jennings, hank williams senior, porter wagner, and most of the early country guys, later diamond reo,brooks/dunn/all the newer guys, love Bonnie Raitt etc....Music is always a part of anything I do.

Yes and No

They have evolved, I still like the old rock but lately I have been listening to Leo Kotke and Kaki King

There is an app you can get called Pandora, at pandora dot com I believe, and you put in a song you like and it finds similar music and plays it, you decide if you like the songs it plays or not and it builds a library based on your tastes

You can have as many stations as you like, and you can mix and add to stations, for rainy days inside or candle light nights, go to Pandora, and create a station with kaki king and leo kotke, and it plays the most wonderful and soothing acoustic guitar music you have ever heard

For housecleaning, put in some dance music, whatever gets you moving, I can't even say how much I love Pandora

"Came to Believe" is powerful stuff.
I've been drifting away from "classic rock" for a long time now and that's been accelerated in recovery.
I've lost my taste for Irish Punk like Drop-Kick Murphys & Flogging Molly. Too damned many drinking songs.
Same with most reggae; Bob Marley just isn't the same without...y'know.

I'm drawn more now to female artists than I have been in the past. Norah Jones & Lily Allen in particuliar.
I'm seeking out more bluegrass & Americana like Trampled By Turtles and 16 Horsepower.

I'd love to make it to the Winnipeg Folk Fest...but not quite yet. A camp-out music festival is just a little too slippery for me this year.

Yes, They have broadened a lot.  I still prefer the OLD CLASSIC COUNTRY

especially "There Stands The Glass"  I have never heard a better description of me as an active alcoholic.   For those that may never have heard this song I have included the Lyrics.

Larry,

Song: There Stands the Glass - Webb Pierce
Album: Classic Country: 1950-1964

There stands the glass ...
That will ease all my pain ...
That will settle my brain ...
It's my first one to day ...
There stands the glass ...
That will hide all my tears ...
That will drown all my fears ...
Brother, I'm on my way. ... ...

CHORUS
I'm wond'ring where you are tonight
I'm wond'ring if you all right
I wonder if you think of me
In my mis-e-ry
There stands the glass
Fill it up to the brim
Till my troubles grow dim
It's my first one to day.

CHORUS

Interesting topic. My tastes have changed a lot but that's also because I was so young when I got sober and it's been many years now. BUT - I LOVE Billy Bragg and I was so glad to see you mention him. Its actually been a long time since I've listened to those CDs so I may have a revival. I too set up a Pandora account but I can't play music while at work and need to get better set up at home. And Aquaman, if you read this, I love The Be Good Tanyas for Americana.

Its also interesting reading this because I have been losing touch with some things recently, and music is one of them. I've been way too busy to check out new music, or pinching pennies. But music has often been part of my recovery, and I love "there stands the glass" - I've heard it by Ted Hawkins - he's a great "drunk" musician if you are into that (I believe he died from our disease). When I really think about it, I've really lost my touch with music. It helped save my life years ago. There was even a time when I was a few years sober that I would go to dance clubs with other sober people and dance non-stop for 5 or 6 hours. It was an amazing emotional outlet, and I never realized it until years later. I'm glad no one ever told me not to go to clubs, I really was there just to dance and didn't even see the alcohol or people other than my friends, but dancing was almost like praying for me. And now I just wish that I had the legs that I did then - I can't tell you how muscular I was from dancing!! Okay, I'm sounding strange now.

But I digress, I am just glad for this seemingly simple topic because I really need to get re-connected to my soul, and music is just one way that I have done that in the past.

So thanks!

That was my experience as well, I am glad that I was not taught to stay away from people places and things but get the spiritual awakening from working the steps

We'd go see live bands at clubs, go dancing all night and it was a very important part of my recovery

It was strange because I could always spot the Sober people, always made me think of Anne Rice's books about the Vampire bars and how they could always spot each other

Music and dancing was very important to me, I was actually just talking about this yesterday, I could gauge my spiritual fitness by whether or not I sang in the shower and danced around the house naked when I got out, one day I looked back and realized I had stopped doing it

Once I lived in a little beach town across the street from a restaurant and they'd get a "wait" of 50-100 people for brunch, one Sunday I was BLASTING my music and dancing around the house naked and I walked outside and got a standing ovation.

I turned around and realized you could see all the way through the house from where they were waiting, they had been watching me dance around naked

I smiled, took my bow, and carried on with my day
