Welcome Doris...Aloha. Stick around here and take notes about what the other members are doing to get and stay sober and also notes about what doesn't work.
Do the stuff that works and don't do what doesn't. Simple and of course we belief this is a simple program (for complicated people).
I don't recommend trying to do this alone especially when you look around you find soooo many who are in and are willing to support your journey.
We suffer from a very cunning, powerful and baffling disease and it doesn't want you to succeed even while you do.
Congradulatioins on your first 24 hours. Check out the meetings in your area, call the hotline number from the telephone book and get that information and hit up that link to the Big Book of AA that Dean gifted you with. The first 164 pages is how we do it easiest.
I spent my early days here sucking up all the advice and pointers. All of it was immediately helpful. Now I have managed a few 24 hour days, and life looks incredibly different. Keep coming back, we all help each other stay sane(well mostly) and sober.
Hello Doris, Welcome and congrats! Fortunately you found a friendly group of addicts. The folks at "Serial Killers Anonymous" aren't as welcoming as we are!
I'm a member of both fellowships. I only came into SKA (serial killers anonymous) recently though when it was pointed out to me that that behavior was wrong. Just kidding. Welcome Doris! We have all had different measures of "success" here over days or years. One important thing to remember always is if you didn't drink today...you are a success too!

WELCOME {{{DORIS}}} To HMS RECOVERY - stay in the middle of the boat, less chance of falling out that way.
It's a great site this is, I am sure that any questions you need to ask will be answered, if I can't answer it, you can bet your life someone else can.

Welcome Doris, this is a great site, plenty of old heads with many years of sobriety, I have only been on this site for 2 weeks and it has helped me keep sober another day, just do like we have all done 1 day at a time, plenty of meetings and listen and learn. I have choices to day, respect and a new life.
Hi I'm back after 6 days! Was not as sober as I hoped but not to bad either. Went to see a guy about a residential stay in his Guest House ( if you know what I mean) but unfortunately budget won't allow it. So here I am back again and judging by all the posts to my initial one I am among friends and all willing to help.....so this shall be my residential Guest House and I shall stay here for however long it takes me to become sober! Thank you so much for your support. Doris
Being sober the way I understand it is kind of an all-or-nothing proposition. I can't be somewhat sober any more than a woman can be somewhat pregnant.
"We seek progress not perfection" Getting sober is an instant decision for some and a process for others. I was not a "one night wonder" that walked into a meeting and never drank again (my Mother is). Doris are you getting to AA meetings and looking for a sponsor? This board is a great supplement to a program in AA but not a substitute. We really need face to face meetings and the fellowship that comes with. It's suggested that newcomers attend 90 meetings in 90 days to break the drinking habit and replace it with a new one, sobriety. Most of the successfully sober people will have done a "90 in 90". Reading about the disease is imperative to educate oneself about what you're up against (a formidable opponent). You can read the "Big Book" of AA here for free. http://www.aa.org/bigbookonline/en_tableofcnt.cfm
I would also recommend getting a copy of "Staying sober" by Terri Gorski. It's an easy read about 100 pages and available on amazon for $7. Get busy it works if you work it. Keep coming back. And good luck in your new journey
