secretary in home groups?

Things have materialized quickly. In less than a week I have found a home group and volunteered to be secretary. I don't even know all the duties of a meeting secretary but I do know I can learn. I am hoping to hear about other people's experience in this particular job. I picked Monday night group for a couple of reasons. Giving me a ride will be on the way for most people going to this particular meeting and it isn't as well supported so I can contribute in a meaningful way as I get to know members. I bought another big book last night and next month I will get the 12 X 12. These are the essentials. No matter what other resources I use for my recovery these 2 books are the core to speaking the language of AA simple and direct. Easy Does It is my focus today as I move down my phone list sending "I'm reaching out messages" to those I haven't met yet.smile

Hi Zahndi,
Good for you jumping right into a home group and service too !! And yeah, IMHO the BB and 12 + 12 are essentials in AA.

Group secretary is basically an easy job, but important. I was secretary for a year for a group about 5 yrs ago.
My duties included and and all paperwork for the group. ie : ordering literature for the group, making / printing flyers for special AA events, taking notes at the groups business meetings, then making sure there are a few copies available of these notes at the next business meeting ( including the treasurers report ) to any members who may want a copy.
Printing up and making sure there are ample meeting lists available for the home group.
Keeping the sponsor/call list updated. Keeping the sobriety calendar ( if your group has one ) updated and then possibly making cakes, cookies or cupcakes for an AA birthday in your group.
Uhh I think thats it, but Im sure I forgot something, lol.

Keep it simple, and you will do fine ... Bless you for your service smile.gif

Outstanding!! Right on! The most important thing our secratary does is make sure all the Newbies put their soberversary in the note book, and then acknowledge them on thier milestone days (or years).

Oh yeah, and never, ever running out of coffee. smile.gif

Every thing sounds doable except the baking. And it just happens another woman who was asked first said she could do the baking but that was all. So isn't it beautiful how everything works out. I enjoy doing paper work and having structure in meetings. Tonight when I went to same location the meeting was like last nights in size and there is no secretary at all. The person who picked me up for the meeting said she wanted to ensure me she will make a committment to Tuesday. Tonights meeting is a big book study. Wow-what a blessing!

In most metings the secretary is the glue that keeps everything organized and together (although AA ought never be organized ;)).

Keep the lists updated and current and introduce ideals to improve the group and make sure others are doing their jobs.

The worst thing you can do is try to do everything.

The best thing you can do is get others involved with resposibilities, make coffee, buying literature, buying supplies, setting up, baking etc.

The more people involved, the more the group will grow.

Try to find something for each new memeber to do.
Good Luck

Thanks Rob84-I really appreciate that point. I have a tendancy to go all or none! Just what I needed to hear. I pray for the courage and mindfulness to take a deep breath and look to others.

Every group shuld have a black file - The Group Handbook - and each service position is described in there, but anyone new into service should be sponsored in, which simply means that the older group members will help you through it until you become familiar with it.

Ditto what Aquaman said, top priority, always have coffee in stock.

Rhandi,
Now that's jumping right in with both feet.  Nicely done!  Enjoy your journey.
