My birth... rebirth... my journey

I'd like to share with you a very special day in my life. When I started in recovery, I really struggled with the thoughts of a Higher Power. I searched many different religions, philosophies, even ancient mythologies. But what hit home with me was the beliefs of the Native Americans.

I live in the Heartland of America and it made it a little easier to understand why the Natives believed what they believed. So I started my spiritual journey, by asking Native elders what they knew and if they could answer questions for me. Many of these folks became close friends.

They were more then willing to share their stories with me and I learned a lot. This journey started about 4 months into my sobriety and now nearly 15 years later it has come to fruition.

In the eyes of a Nation - I have shown that my heart is pure and filled with strength and hope. Today, August 4, 2009, I was adopted into the Wolf Clan of the Cherokee Nation.

My name "A tse Nu sti" means "Messenger." The elder who named me said, "I name you Messenger, after observing you and the message of love and hope and strength that you give... so Dave the Messenger... is now a Cherokee Indian. May your life song be long and your path smoother and straighter... This I pray to our Great Spirit... "U NE QUA"

I just wanted to share this with you. This is something I've wanted for a long time. And I know it would have never been possible without sobriety.

Wow, Dave.. My heart & gladness goes out to you. That is such a great honour & I can only imagine just how beyond your wildest you must be feeling right now. I'm so pleased for you. I think it was the Native Americans who I first ever felt a kinship & admiration for their spirituality when I was a child & I've always loved them since though I don't know a great deal about their beliefs & values, only have an impression but your story is amazing inspiration to me nonetheless. What a beautiful & fitting name they have gifted to you also. What a present. Thank you for sharing your story here, all your stories. Thank you for carrying the message here too. Keep on coming back ;) Recovery Love, Danielle x

that was an inspiring read - a big next step in a journey that has lasted 15 years so far. and your Cherokee name of messenger is so apt - carrying the message - I too struggled a bit with the higher power thing, I did my God shopping, tried and tasteed different religions and rituals, it wasn't until I heard myslef say to a minister that there are many paths to God and heard him reply but there is only one true path and one true God that i understood that it's not about religion it's about spirituality.

the one true path and one true God works for him and that's fine. what i have works for me and that's fine too.

My higher power is with me and within me all the time, I don't know what it is or what he looks like, but he speaks in a Yorkshire accent, is blunt and to the point and often swears. the demons whisper silk and honey into my ear, God tell's them to bugger off, or sometimes He says go on then Bill, see if you can sort this one out by yourself - let's pressure test the system - oh look, bit leaky over there, get it fixed.

Wah Doh, A tse Nu sti.  The Native American Indian culture including Cherokee have
been an affirmation of my own awareness of the Higher Power who I first met from
within the culture I was surrounded by.  In recovery, due to all of the messengers I
have had the blessing to sit with and listen to and learn from, I have arrived at the
simple awareness that now keeps me connected, mind, body, spirit and emotions.

I am grateful always for your message.   smile

That's an incredible story Dave.  Thank you for sharing it.  The name messenger is very apt for you it would seem.  I take from your share here what 15 years of spiritual growth and progress in the program can do for you.  I want that and I will keep working for it.  If there were not people like you to share this kind of stuff, I would not be able to keep focused on what I strive for which is truly spiritual harmony, peace, serenity, and to be of good service to god and man.  Thank you for carrying the message that you do.  It helps us all and is a living example of the 3rd step prayer.

Mark
