Anger is never the first emotion

Hey all... looking for perspectives on managing anger, fear, and pain in recovery in healthy ways.  My very first sponsor years ago taught me something that has been invaluable, "Anger is never the first emotion... its always covering pain, shame, or fear."  I have found that to be infinitely true in just about every situation under the sun.  However, after 15 years in program, I am finding that there are truly deep seated, underlying issues that have been nipped at in 4th steps and counselling still persist in rearing their ugly heads.  I never wanted to be one of those old timers who was angrier and sicker than some newcomers... I think there comes a time when you just have to release EVERYTHING, and I do mean everything, to be able to live a sane, sober, peaceful life.  Thoughts on practical, hands on, effective ways of dealing with old anger, old fear, old pain would be greatly appreciated!
