Alano Club, Myrtle Beach, and a Question
Permalink

Leaving Monday for my annual bike trip to Myrtle Beach. I contacted area 82, via email,  and asked about meetings. I was told they have 4  a day reallllly close to where I'll be staying. Now, my question is this - how does one pronounce "Alano"?

Is it -

 UH -  LON -  OH

or -

AL -  UH - NO

I apparently mis pronounced it and my sponsor felt it necessary to correct me (in a meeting)!

Somebody help me out... hmm

(((hugs)))

Jen

Hi Jen,
Well I will try, I used to attend a regular Alano Club meeting for years in San Rafael,

so, here's my input....think of the name Loni and change it to Lano and put an A before the name at the same time, A Lon o , with the "Lon" part sounding a little more drawn out, just a little, more like lawn.

Toodles, and hope you have a great time.

Toni

That's what I thought. My sponsor says it's Al uh no, sorta like alanon but no instead of non. ! I thought,  but didn't say it, 'that just sounds stupid' but what do I know! I wasn't thrilled about her 'correcting me' in the manner she did it........oh well!

I can't wait to get outta town. I hope the weather will be good. Once again, due to my broken up body, won't be able to RIDE to MB, so trailering the bike again, but I'm puttin' her on the road as soon as I get there -- woo hoo!  I can feel the wind in my hair (and the bugs in my teeth  rofl.gif) already.

Thanks, Toni for your input.

((hug))

Doll, I think that your pronounciation (the first one) is correct, and that's what we called the club in VA. However, the club here in St. Pete, everyone calls it the the other (imo wrong way smile.gif ) "Al lano". So I guess that both are correct.  SOOOO  in "Al Lano"  do what the "AL Lanonians" Do teevee.gif

I've always used  Ah...lan...no     A's with and Ah sound.   None of my sponsors
ever did that to me and taught me never to do it to others.   Power and control
stuff wasn't a part of the journey.   I don't think it was because they feared my
"in your face" reactions either.  Besides I never gave any of my sponsors the
permissions.   Just me.  Have a great bike trip!!

I'm with you, Doll.  One of my home groups is held in an Alano club, and everyone I know in Los Angeles pronounces Alano the way you do.  I also identify with the sponsor control issues; my sponsor is wayyyyy over-protective and controlling with everyone she sponsors.  She admits that she has true Al-Anon issues, so she also regularly attends those meetings as well as A.A.  I just try to remember that each of us is a "work in progress", even sponsors!biggrin

Anyhoo, have a wonderful trip; wish I was going with you, sounds like a lot of fun.  smile

Love,

BGG

Thanks, all.

God knows I love my sponsor. But she is sooooo controlling. She does qualify for Al Anon, but doesn't go. She also rarely makes meetings anymore and we've become more of friends than sponsor, sponsee. I found out she doesn't even have a sponsor since hers died last year! None of this is a good sign for her or for me.

Hmmmm what to do???!!!! I've been taught a sponsor needs a sponsor.

I'm glad that the majority think it's Uh Lon OH! The other way just sounds silly to ME rofl.gif

Good night, all, happy sober dreams.

Jen

I grew up in a multi-generational alchoholic family (paternal). As such, I was active in Alateen and Alanon. The correct way to say "Alano" would be AL-un-no, consistent with AL-uh-teen and AL-uh-non.

One would not say "al-UH-teen" or "al-UH-non;" therefore , one should not say "al-AHH-no."

In the grand scheme of things, this is probably not a huge issue. Sobriety is a much bigger deal!

The uninformed Sponsor that "corrected" you was irresponsible and disrespectful.

"ONE DAY AT A TIME, THROUGH HIS GRACE!"
