I've used AAs 12 steps successfully to stop drinking, but now I have a new problem. Food addiction. I hope the steps will serve me well again. I keep thinking about food, and it has gotten out of control. I hope I can get through this.
I have talked with a close friend (and fellow AA'er) who is also an alcohol and drug addiction counselor about the 'psychology of addiction'. Believe it or not, we are more at risk of picking up another addiction even while taking "The Steps" to overcome our original. It is in our makeup to seek something else to fill the gap.
I have found that my best solution is much like Dean has suggested in many of his posts. I have to get involved in life....find activities that fill my time...walk, ride a motorcyle, run, swim, fish, bowl, golf...find a healthy hobby/pasttime. AND to get into The Program as deeply as I have to, to occupy my time. I find it's harder to put anything in your mouth, (be it booze, drugs or food) when your are occupied with service work, or while talking with others at a meeting.
Offering a prayer for positive cosmic viabrations to come your way, Dan
