I i'm new here but have been around AA for a year or so.  Would be grateful for a bit of advice.  I recently came home from my 2nd detox and have been sober for 14 days.  I am still having really bad cravings - I have tried to think about how that 1st drink will ruin my life and have seen what this terrible illness has done to other people, luckily I'm not there "yet" but when the urge for a drink comes it is terrible. Through AA i have made many friends and got lots of phone numbers but sometimes when I have a craving it's not practical to phone an AA friend.

Any advice would be gladly appreciated.

Paisley

Absolutely NOTHING about alcoholism is 'practical' -- my HG's motto is "Call before you fall."

Those who readily hand out their phone number are well aware they could get a call at 3am!

(((hugs)))

Hey P
Welcome! I know I struggled with the cravings for a while. Only by picking up the phone, hitting lots of meetings, sometimes three in one day, saved my butt! I dont know when or how the obsession left me but I do know praying for the strength somehow removed the cravings. What a dang miracle! For me a simple pray of, god take the obsession to drink away from me, worked!!
Best of luck and keep on staying sober!

Hi Paisley,

Congrats on 14 sober days. And, welcome to MIP.

My cravings didn't just go away on their own straight away. But, as each day passed they got a little less and no I rarely have any cravings. The answer, for this alkie, was to get to as many meetings as I could, share how I was feeling, get a sponsor and start working the steps.

I was given so many 'phone numbers and didn't want to call anyone when I was first getting sober. But, now when I give someone my number I truly want her to call if she is having a tough time. Picking up the 'phone is a life-line. People don't give out their 'phone numbers if they don't want you to call.

Just hang in there and it really will get better.

Please keep posting and letting us know how things are going for you, won't you? We're all here for you.

Take care,

Carol

Do you realize just how much you would be helping somebody else by picking up the phone and calling them ?
Also please read the Doctors Opinion in the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous for it will explain the phenomenom of craving there and possibly help you better understand the sickness of alcoholism.  If you havent had a drink in over 2 weeks now, the craving is really a desire or obsession.  The booze is most likely out of your system.  A desire or thought is much diff than cravings.
Read the book ,get a sponsor and work the steps.  You wont be sorry you did.
