Everyday . . . life confronts us with new problems to be solved which force us to adjust our old programs accordingly.
--Dr. Ann Faraday

Facing the day straight on is occasionally difficult to do. There are those days we feel like crawling under the covers and staying there, certain that we can't handle whatever might be asked of us. Maybe today is one of those days. Perhaps we feel 12 years old, instead of 42. To consciously behave like a responsible 42-year-old is out of the question. Acting "as if" is the next best thing, the program tells us, and it is.

Acting "as if" also comes in handy when only a minor kink interferes with the day's progression. Most problems don't fit an easy solution or a familiar one. However, most problems are dispensed with by seeing them as opportunities for creative response, calmly seeking guidance and then moving ahead slowly, being aware of the effects of our actions.

Today, and every day, I will have an opportunity to think creatively and to rely on my inner guide. Instead of dreading the unfamiliar, I will be glad for it. It's moving me ever closer to understanding life's mysteries.

Rick

Those were prophetic words.

For once I was in at work at 9 am instead of the usual 3 pm, as I was expecting the delivery of a printer.

Most of the first hour at work was spent painfully going up and down the stairs to the toilet slowly expelling last nights curry drop by drop.

Phoned the supplier for an ETA and they had not put the order through yet. Coming tomorrow for sure.

Went to the bank and withdrew cash for my holiday and went to the Post Office to change it into Euros, where the staff were so rude and unhelpful that I decided to take the hit on the exchange and go back to the bank.

Take a hit - that was an understatement.

Crossing the road outside the Post Office, I was run over by a bicyclist, who then tried to attack me in the middle of the road. He was a lot lighter than me and shorter and was easy to restrain with a minimum of force. I continued on my way.

Just like in the movies, when you think that the baddie is finished and you are now able to breathe safely - he strikes again. Leaping off his bicycle which he has ridden the wrong way up a dual carriageway, he jumps on my again. I fend him off and call the Police. A bystander comes and talks to the bicyclist, who proceeds to threaten him and calls both of us rude and nasty names (OK he called me a fat cunt and the other guy an ugly fat fuck). I laugh and the bicyclist goes ape. A small crowd gathers round and each and every one of us is offered a violent death if he ever sees us again.

One guy comes over and says he saw me being run over and being attacked by the mad cyclist. But he does not want to be a witness so he disappears.

Eventually the Police arrive, and after asking a lot of questions and taking a lot of details, it turns out that the manic cyclist is well known to them as trouble and a junkie.

The Police now have a new policy of not arresting or charging people who assault and threaten members of the public. So they won't be doing anything.

I went back home to bed.
