Thought Id start a new thread and ask those of you that have a sponsor what exactly they have you "do" to keep sober......

I know go to meetings, read the literature..

How for example do you work the steps, how often do you meet, does your sponsor have you call them everyday, do they offer suggestions on "things" to do????

Any imput would be appreciated!!!

Lani

a good sponsor, needs to be the same sex for a start, a person who has been sober 5 years or more, and a person who knows by experience that doing the steps starts from number 1 ,through to 12 ,u cant do them in any other sequence and have any success. many people have tried but to no avail, my sponsor and many other old timers encouraged me to take it easy, and do the steps 1,to, 12 over a 2 to 4 year period, step 9 FOR INSTANCE CAN TAKE ALL THE REST OF OUR LIFE AFTER WE HAVE DONE 12 SO TO SPEAK. I think a "good" sponsor.. if youd call it that, is one that knows nothing HE does will "keep you sober".
My job as a sponsor is to lay out the steps to the new commer, exactly as they are explained in the big book. Most get through them in twelve to sixteen weeks and imediatly begin helping others. I encourage them to do service work, chair meetings, join commitees, ect...
It's also important for me to try to set a good example in the way I live as well.

I'm just a drunk that has recieved a gift... My job is to share it.

good news lani, pm returned. I think you're asking if a sponsor should make suggestion as to moving along through the steps and IMO the answer is yes. I liked Miller's approach.
Once you schedule your 5th step, then making a goal to move through the other 7 steps in a few months time I believe is a good one. It's easy to put that on the back burner and postpone indefinately. I saw someone else post to move on past your 9th step, as it will take awhile (maybe years) to get opportunities to see those people, and complete the 12 steps (you'll always be working them but get through learning them smile.gif )

directions for choosing a sponsor are in the BB, i cant remember where (dont have mine on me, im at work)... the one line says something about his deportment shouts that he has a real answer... there are no axes to grind ect... (obviously not an exact quote)

As for me... A sponsor is someone who has experience working the steps as they are laid out in the bb. My sponsor suggests all of the things that she has done. if i choose to i may do what she has... Prayer, making meetings, speaking to her / meeting with her consistantly/reaching out to other women. That is it... Aside from not picking up.
